🔥 PLAYGROUND PROBLEMS SERIES, CREATING YOUR PULL SAW 🔥

Alright nerds… We’ve seen your comments… and we mean ALL OF THEM. 👀 So we’re going to go over building our pull saw.

If you’ve been following the Playground Problems series, you’ve already watched this little DIY tool cut a patient out of a swing and perform a toy car roof removal. Same concept, completely different scenarios, and that’s exactly why we like having it in the mental toolbox.

The setup is simple:
➰Titanium-core w**d whacker/trimmer line
✋🏻 Two inexpensive pull start T-handles
✂️ Something capable of cutting the metallic core line
🧠 A little ingenuity

Build it based on the circumference of what you need to cut and the access you have around your patient. We secure one end of the line to a T-handle with an overhand knot, you don’t necessarily have to build the entire saw before placing it. When access around an entrapped patient is limited, leave one T-handle OFF. Feed the free end of the line through or around the material first, then attach your second handle once the line is in position. Now you have a pull saw in a space where getting a conventional saw blade safely between the patient and the object may be difficult or unnecessarily risky.

We’ve used this concept on hard and soft plastics, and it can be adapted to different entrapments where you need a controlled cut but don’t necessarily want a rotary tool, reciprocating saw, or other powered blade running inches away from a scared or moving patient.

Is it replacing your power tools? No.
Is it the answer to every plastic entrapment? No.
Is it another cheap, simple option worth knowing when Plan A isn’t working? Absolutely.

That’s really been the point of this entire series: start with the simplest and least destructive solution, escalate when necessary, and understand your tools well enough to adapt them to the problem in front of you. Thanks for watching 😎🤙🏻

🔥 PLAYGROUND PROBLEMS SERIES PART THREE, TOYS GONE WRONG 🔥

Alright nerds, after Part Two apparently broke the internet… we’re back. 💀 This time our victim has managed to wedge themselves inside a plastic toy car. With a hand from HWD Special Ops 31 we were able to do a toy version of a roof off and get the person out in under 180 seconds (3 minutes).

And before the comments get started.. YES, WE TRIED TO TAKE IT APART FIRST. For training purposes multiple attempts were made to separate, disassemble, pull, pry, and manipulate the toy enough to free the patient before we ever considered cutting it.

Try the simplest, least destructive option first. If the patient can be safely removed by reversing how they got in, manipulating the plastic, removing hardware, or disassembling the object, do it.

But this thing wasn’t having it. So instead of continuing to pull on the patient or escalating to a powered cutting tool, we went back to the same homemade pull saw from Part Two.

Same titanium-core w**d whacker line.
Same T-handles.
Same entrapped victim.
Completely different problem.

By fishing the line through a small opening, we can make controlled cuts through the soft plastic without putting a running blade inches from the patient, which is really the point of this entire series. We’ve scrolled past a dozen of these toy car videos.

This setup can be adapted to all kinds of soft plastic entrapments where conventional disassembly isn’t working, access is limited, or introducing a rotary tool, reciprocating saw, or other powered cutting tool creates unnecessary risk around the patient.

Start simple. Escalate as needed. Solve the problem in front of you. 😎🤙🏻

🔥 PLAYGROUND PROBLEMS SERIES PART TWO, SWING SET 🔥

Alright nerds, let’s go through a person that’s stuck inside of a swing. With a hand from HWD Special Ops 31 our demo shows how a single truck response can safely and efficiently assist any trapped victims stuck in a swing set.

The first objective isn’t cutting the seat a part, it’s relieving the extreme pressure the victim will be feeling. By lowering the patient to the ground, we take gravity out of the equation, improve comfort, and begin restoring circulation before starting the extrication.

The longer a patient remains entrapped, the more swelling, pain, and loss of circulation become a concern. In prolonged entrapments with significant muscle compression, rescuers should also be thinking about complications like rhabdomyolysis, and in rare severe cases, crush syndrome.

Once the patient is safely on the ground, the pull saw we discussed earlier allows us to remove the plastic seat with controlled cuts. No spinning blades, no sparks, no loud power tools inches from a scared patient, and they’re released in less than 2 minutes! The pull saw isn’t just for playground swings. We’ve also used the same concept on other soft plastics where introducing a rotary tool, reciprocating saw, or larger cutting tool would create unnecessary risk around the patient.

🔥 POV: Your classroom is 100 feet in the air 🔥

One of the biggest conversations before Rope Tech is always crane day. At SoFlo TRT, our Rope Technician students have the opportunity to train on a crane, giving them exposure to an environment many rescuers may encounter right here in South Florida. With construction, industrial sites, ports, and constant development, incidents involving injured workers, equipment failures, and elevated rescues are a reality.

Our goal isn’t to create training scars, it’s to build confidence. No yelling, no ego. Just calm, experienced professionals coaching students through every step until what seemed intimidating becomes just another evolution.

That’s the kind of confidence we’re trying to build. Not the confidence that comes from thinking you know everything. The confidence that comes from quality instruction, repetition, and trusting YOUR training when it’s time to go over the edge.

🔥 POV: Handcuff Removal 🔥

Alright nerds, you guys blew up our ring removal series and we’ve all had that 2 A.M. station doorbell or call that starts with… “Sooo… this is really embarrassing… but I’m stuck.” The next sentence can be literally ANYTHING, but let’s focus on handcuffs.

Sometimes a patient has lost the key, sometimes it snapped off inside the lock, and sometimes a LEO is standing next to you because the cuff key broke while trying to loosen a cuff that had gotten too tight during an arrest or transport. No matter how it happened, the problem is the same and sometimes we can problem without getting the whole TRT team involved.

This technique is NOT for double locked handcuffs, it’s for single locked cuffs where the key is broken or missing but luckily for us, understanding the mechanism is the key. A standard single lock handcuff uses a spring loaded ratchet and pawl. Every click of the swinging arm locks another tooth into place, allowing the cuff to tighten but preventing it from backing out. Instead of forcing the cuff apart, we’re carefully manipulating that pawl to release the ratchet and separate the jaws. Saving time, reducing damage, and avoiding unnecessary cutting.

🔥 POV: RING REMOVAL SERIES. Cutttt Then Snap. 🔥

Alright nerds this is the last video for ring removal techniques/options we have locked and loaded and one of the biggest question we kept seeing commented was:

“Why don’t you just cut the ring?”

Well… sometimes we do.

If the ring is made from a softer metal, one clean cut with a rotary tool (Dremel) followed by a ring spreader is often all it takes to safely remove it. Not every ring needs two cuts. Not every ring needs to be cracked. And not every stuck ring can be removed with the thread method.

That’s been the point of this entire series. The material determines the method, not the other way around.

Gold.
Silver.
Copper.
Many stainless steel bands.

One cut… Then snap.

Harder alloys may require different techniques altogether, which is why identifying the material before you ever pick up a tool is one of the most important parts of ring removal.

⚠️ Throughout every technique, the priorities stay the same:
• Protect the finger.
• Keep the ring cool.
• Communicate with your patient.
• Wear eye protection.
• Have more than one option in your toolbox.

🔥 POV: If You Can’t Cut It… Crack It. 🔥

Alright nerds, next up is cracking the ring if we can’t cut it. In the last video we showed how a Dremel can make quick work of most rings. But when you realize you’re dealing with tungsten carbide, it’s time to stop wasting cutting wheels and change tactics.

Because tungsten is extremely hard, while still being brittle, we use that property to our advantage. With the ring properly sized in the jaws of a tungsten ring cracker, steady pressure is applied until the ring fractures. No heat. No shower of sparks. No crushing the finger. Just understanding the material you’re working with and choosing the right tool for the job. 😎🤙🏻💍
