1/22/26 AFT Protecting the education rights of our students.

Yesterday, the Trump administration withdrew its appeal of a federal judge’s ruling in favor of a lawsuit backed by the AFT, which blocked the administration’s attempt to require school districts to censor lessons, abandon student support programs and certify compliance with its unlawful interpretation of civil rights.

The withdrawal marked a final defeat in the administration’s effort to undermine decades of civil rights laws that helped create educational opportunity for all kids.

Retirement Planning Workshop for Public Sector AFT Members!

AFT Massachusetts is hosting a retirement planning workshop on December 9, 2025 at 7 pm via Zoom and all public sector members are welcome!

The financial professionals of Teacher Retirement Solutions (TRS) have partnered with AFT Massachusetts and specialize in providing independent financial guidance, strategies and solutions to educators, school employees, librarians and their families throughout New England. Join TRS’ John Gregorio, a Certified Financial Planner, on December 9, 2025 via Zoom for a comprehensive workshop for prospective retirees. The Massachusetts' public employee retirement formula, Social Security and living in retirement will be among the topics discussed.

AFT Union Scholarships! Dependents of union members can register for the Labor Exam with their high school!

Scholarships for AFT Families!

Along with our union siblings, the AFT Massachusetts is committed to supporting the next generation of trade unionists to build a stronger tomorrow for all working families of the Commonwealth.

That’s why we award thousands of dollars in scholarships each year to eligible high school seniors who are dependents of AFT Massachusetts members. Scholarship awards are based on an applicant’s results on a labor history exam administered by the Massachusetts AFL-CIO and honor former AFT leaders Kathy Kelley, Albert Shanker, and Sandra Feldman, and long-time field representative Jay Porter.

The labor history exam focuses on teaching our children about the history of unions and about groups of people who fought for better wages and protections.

“While envisioning our future, it’s critical that we never stop teaching about and learning from our rich history. The AFT Massachusetts remains dedicated to supporting all students across the Commonwealth, especially those who are part of our union family,” said AFT Massachusetts President Jessica Tang. “To the incoming group of exam takers, this is a unique opportunity to learn more about the history of working families, just like yours, who fight for justice and equality. As you engage with these resources, remember that you will inevitably be part of this story, too, and it's up to you what role you will play.”

To be considered for a scholarship, applicants must be an AFT Massachusetts member or the dependent of an AFT Massachusetts member in their senior year of high school with plans to attend college or other post-secondary school in the fall of the following academic year.
