👇 Some common pilates misconceptions! Specially if you’ve always been a gym girlie, the way pilates works is different than other traditional training methods. We’ve got to rewire our brain to approach the pilates practice differently. 👇
🛑 Pilates burns a lot of calories!
Not necessarily the case! There’s no set range for reformer pilates. An average 50-to-60-minute reformer Pilates class burns between 250 and 450 calories. Your actual burn depends heavily on your body weight, the class intensity, and whether the routine uses jumpboards or fast-paced resistance circuits.
🟢Factors that impact your burn include:
-Body Weight: Heavier bodies burn more energy during the same movements.
-Class Style: Jumpboard, fusion, or cardio-centric reformer classes push the high end of the range (350–500+ calories), while slow-flow or beginner classes sit lower (200–300 calories).
-Resistance: Using heavier spring settings forces muscles to work harder, increasing overall energy demand, while light spring work focuses on body weight & control, more focus, but can show up as less calories.
*Smartwatch Tracking: Fitness trackers often undercount Pilates because they rely on arm movement or high step counts, frequently logging only 150–200 calories even during a vigorous session.
🛑 “I’m not doing a good workout if I’m not sweating!”
Wrong! You do not need to sweat for Pilates to work. Sweat is only your body’s way of cooling down. Pilates works by building deep muscle strength, stability, and control. You can get a great workout without dropping a single bead of sweat.
🟢You may not sweat because:
-Slow movement: Pilates uses slow and steady motions instead of fast running.
-Low heat: The room temperature is cool.
-Body type: Some people just sweat less than others.
📌 Our takeaway; each body is different. Each class your body will be in a different phase. Each class you will work differently, use different muscles, and learn new or perfect moves. Don’t focus on calorie counts or sweat. Focus on how your body is feeling. Do you feel like you’re getting stronger? Can you hold planks longer, can you touch your toes in teaser?
