RIP Byron Janis!

Byron Janis, renowned American classical pianist who overcame debilitating arthritis, dies at 95 Acclaimed American classical pianist Byron Janis has died at the age of 95. His wife, Maria Cooper Janis, said her husband died Thursday evening in New York City.

Sad news. Huge creative talent and scholar in his own right. Saw him perform live while in graduate school.

This is the research we do and share to support healthy teaching and playing. And, this is what it means to hire a professional to teach even the youngest students, since those muscle (kinesthetic) memories are set from the first approaches to the piano.

Our graduate music students once again wowed me with their fabulous final projects in our keyboard technique class. Topics ranged from a comparison of ballet positions and organ pedal technique to the vagus nerve's role in performance anxiety to types of proprioception to an overview of organ technique, and much more! Dipping into neuroscience, anatomy, physiology, meditation, etc. and all circling back to how we develop healthier technique and become better musicians. Thank you, MUSI 504ers.

The Department of Music is delighted to accept the donation of the Jeanne Wanner violin from Sam and Vicki Wanner.

Jeanne Wanner and her parents, Charles and Hattie Fletcher, purchased this violin from its maker, Abram Killinger, in 1938. Jeanne played this violin for more than 80 years.
