Alumni Love Story: Dan ’82 and Lisa Doornbos ’83 Heneveld
In 1980, a group of Arcadian fraternity brothers made a bet to see who could wait the longest to get a date to the homecoming dance but still pull through and find a girl to say yes! By Thursday the week of the dance, all the fraternity brothers except Dan Heneveld had caved and asked a girl to the dance. He won the bet as long as he could find a girl to say yes! To make things more fun, Dan said he would double the bet, go to the library, and ask the first girl who walked through the doors of Van Zoeren Library (in the 80s). So they all went to the library and Lisa Doornbos was the first girl to enter. Dan and Lisa had never met before but one of the fraternity brothers knew Lisa, so he asked her if she had a date to the dance. Lisa said no so Dan piped up from the back and said, “Well, would you want to go with me?” Lisa knew this group were kind of jokesters, so she said, "If you're serious, call me at my dorm room tonight!" Dan called, they went to the dance, and the rest is history!! The best part is those same guys stood up in their wedding and they are still close friends today. Dan and Lisa are so thankful for Hope College and that the Lord allowed for their paths to cross that day!

Alumni Love Story: Michael '14 and Paige Holicki '17 Schofield
Paige says, "I met Michael on the very day I moved into Hope. He was a senior, and I was a freshman. Weepy after my parents left on move-in day, my brother brought me to meet his goofy best friend…Michael. We clicked almost instantly. Despite spending most of our relationship long-distance, we dated for four years and got married the summer I graduated from Hope, in Dimnent Chapel — a dream of mine. In the nearly nine years since, we’ve built a life together across New York/New Jersey, Connecticut, and now back in Michigan. Most recently, we welcomed our third baby. We’re so grateful to Hope College — not just for the foundation of our education and faith, but for the beginning of our family story."
