FEATURED WRITE UP FROM OUR FRIENDS AT THE ALLIANCE FOR CULTURAL AND ETHNIC HARMONY--A GROUP THAT CONSISTENTLY SHOWS UP FOR TRIO UPWARD BOUND AND ITS SCHOLARS!
Every year since 2013, ACEH has awarded two scholarships to high school graduates selected by the TRIO Upward Bound program at Hope College. Almost all have been the first in their families to attend college. Leading Hope's UB are Yadira Martinez-Castillo, director, and Toby Hutchins, assistant director.
Hutchins said, “We are forever grateful for your support of TRIO UB scholars. At a time when TRIO programs are scheduled to be cut and the validity of the barriers of first-generation, low-income students is being questioned, the continued loyalty of ACEH to our students does not go unnoticed.”
Let’s meet this year’s recipients, both graduates of Fennville High School:
Jaqueline Benitz is the daughter of Eileen Gonzalez and Guadalupe Benitez. She will enter Hope College to major in psychology. Jacqueline says: “Without TRIO, I would have been lost in a world made to work against people like me. I will never regret the time I spent on Hope’s campus with Upward Bound.”
Michael Herrera will attend Michigan Technological University in Houghton, MI to study engineering. His parents are Chanthavilay Herrera and Michael Herrera. “Without TRIO Upward Bound,” Michael says, “I don’t think I would have decided to go to college.”
Many thanks for generous gifts from local donors and from the estate of the late Marvin Younger, ACEH president-emeritus. Your support has made these 14 years of scholarships possible!
