Join us for our General Body Meeting May 1st at 12pm EDT, where we will discuss the Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie TED Talk, "The Danger of a Single Story".
How did the talk make you reflect on your own story?
What are some common single stories you’ve encountered about your identity or community?
During your time at Hope, did you ever feel reduced to a “single story”? What did that look like?
How did attending a predominantly white institution shape the stories others told about you - or that you told about yourself?
Have you ever found yourself believing or internalizing a “single story” about your own group or another group?

Tung Nguyen, ‘08, is currently a Principal in the West Ottawa School District in Michigan. When asked how his time at Hope College contributed to his current pursuits and career path, he said:
“Hope College was truly a springboard for me in so many ways. It offered countless opportunities to grow academically, in critical thinking, and in leadership. Most importantly, Hope fostered my growth as a person. What stands out most isn’t just the classes, it’s the moments when I was challenged to grow beyond what I thought I could do.
Hope gave me opportunities to stretch. I can remember times when professors and mentors encouraged me to speak up, trust my voice, and embrace my identity with confidence. That confidence has been a steady guide in my career and continues to shape the way I move forward today.”
