Notes on Cloud Formation by Candace Hicks will open next week in De Pree Gallery! Join us on Friday, October 9, for an artist talk by Hicks about the exhibition. The talk will be held at 5:30 pm in Cook Auditorium (De Pree Art Center), followed by an opening reception in the gallery to check out the artwork! The exhibition will be open October 9–November 5. Admission is free and open to the public.

Hicks takes embroidery’s double meaning of “embellishment” as a starting point to approach storytelling as an artform susceptible to exaggeration. Her series of narrative patchwork quilts, The Story I Tell at Parties, are essentially self-publication painstakingly rendered by hand in thread. Probing the reliability of memory, she recalls her first job under the unlikely supervision of a 15-year-old boss with gigantism who vanished without explanation.
