Ready to take the stage? 🎤🎶

Park Theatre Open Mic Jr. happens every third Sunday of the month from 6-9 PM, and Avalon sponsors these events. The next one is Sunday, October 18, at the Park Theatre, located at 248 S. River in downtown Holland!

It’s the perfect opportunity for students who want to dip their toes into performing without the pressure of a formal recital. Any type of performance is welcome: solo piano pieces, guitar songs, vocal performances, even poetry or comedy! 🎹🎸🎤

The host, Jair, is incredible at firing up the crowd and making all the performers feel welcome. The audience is filled with other young performers and their families, creating an encouraging atmosphere where everyone cheers for everyone. It’s especially great for first-time performers! 👏

Students can sign up by contacting us, and students are also encouraged to come even if they’re not performing. There’s so much inspiration in supporting fellow musicians.

Want to perform? Email [email protected] to be put on the list. See you at the show! ⭐

FROM A CHRISTMAS PROGRAM IN 1959 TO THE WORLD'S STAGE: WE FOUND HIM!

In our September Music Academy newsletter, we shared a letter from Avalon founder Ruth Burkholder answering a student’s question: “Do you think you’ve made a difference?” She told of a winter-night phone call in 2000 from a man asking if she was the Ruth Burkholder who taught music in Deerfield, Illinois. She was. He was a student she taught in 1959-her first year of teaching, calling 40 years later to say thank you.

After a rough start as a kid who didn’t fit in, singing his first solo in Ruthie's school Christmas program helped him realize “which side of the audience he belonged on.” That evening set the course for his life.

Then we went looking for him. Warren Fremling earned a PhD in vocal performance, sang on Broadway and in touring shows, performed in operas, and continues a storied music career. Rich’s full interview includes a White House recommendation, Warren’s Chicago Symphony debut opposite Beverly Sills, more than 100 performances of “Billy Bigelow,” and advice for students just starting out.

The attached image is a quote from the interview. You can read the whole thing in our October newsletter:

Meet the Avalon Music Academy October Student of the Month, Landon! 🎉🎶

Landon has been taking lessons at Avalon for three years. He started with piano, added voice, and most recently began playing harmonica! He stays focused in every lesson, and it really shows in his playing. 👏

In September, Landon performed at Park Theatre’s Open Mic Jr. night, debuting a medley of piano themes he arranged, followed by a rollicking version of “Piano Man” by Billy Joel. His performance earned a standing ovation! 🎹🙌

Landon’s favorite musicians include Beethoven, Michael Jackson, Black Gryph0n, and his teachers, Mr. Chris and Mr. Daniel. When he’s not making music, he enjoys spinning around, hanging with friends, playing soccer, and video games. ⚽🎮

His favorite part of lessons? Learning new songs and discovering new instruments! His advice to fellow students is simple and encouraging: “Keep trying hard. You are doing great. Always do your best.” 💙

Congratulations, Landon! We’re so proud of your dedication, curiosity, creativity, and continued growth! 🌟
