Both Roman and Eastern rite Catholics celebrate the Church's feast of the Transfiguration today, August 6, on its traditional date for both calendars.

The feast commemorates one of the pinnacles of Jesus' earthly life, when he revealed his divinity to three of his closest disciples by means of a miraculous and supernatural light.

Before his triumphal entry into Jerusalem, Christ climbed to a high point on Mount Tabor with his disciples Peter, James, and John. While Jesus prayed upon the mountain, his appearance was changed by a brilliant white light which shone from him and from his clothing.

During this event, the Old Testament figures of Moses and the prophet Elijah also appeared, and spoke of how Christ would suffer and die after entering Jerusalem, before his resurrection.

Matthew, Mark, and Luke all record that the voice of God was heard, confirming Jesus as his son (Matthew 17:5, Mark 9:6, Luke 9:35). Peter and John make specific reference to the event in their writings, as confirming Jesus' divinity and his status as the Messiah (2 Peter 1:17, John 1:14).

Bishop Garcia Underscores the Significance of the Voting Rights Act and Encourages Recommitment to the Work Which Remains

The Voting Rights Act was signed into law on August 6, 1965. The landmark legislation helped advance equal access to the ballot and strengthened participation in our democracy. In recognition of the six decades since it was enacted, and its continued significance today, Bishop Daniel E. Garcia, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Subcommittee for the Promotion of Racial Justice and Reconciliation issued a statement.

“The Voting Rights Act of 1965 emerged from the sacrifices and perseverance of countless individuals who worked to secure the fundamental right to vote, particularly for communities of color that had long faced discrimination and exclusion.

“Today, many communities of color worry about how recent developments will impact their fair representation and future participation in the democratic process. Echoing our Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, we affirm the value of democracy ‘insofar as it guarantees the effective participation of citizens’ as a reflection of their dignity. For decades, the U.S. bishops have advocated for the right of eligible citizens to participate fully in public life, including the protection of voting rights. We encourage all citizens to exercise their right to vote and urge policymakers to safeguard voting rights and promote fair representation for all. Today is also an occasion to remember the hard-won history of voting rights in our country, and to recommit to the work which remains.

“May we continue to work together for the common good and for a society in which all citizens are able to participate fully and faithfully in our democracy.”

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the tragic death of Dale Schultz, a beloved alumni parent, gifted artist, and member of our extended Choir School family. Dale and his wife, Reinette, were among those involved in the Twin Falls, Idaho, shooting. While we mourn the loss of Dale, we continue to pray for Reinette, who remains hospitalized as she recovers from her injuries.

During this difficult time, we invite our school community to continue to pray for the Schultz family as they traverse this horrific loss and injury. The St. Olaf’s parish community will be hosting a Rosary on Tuesday, August 4, at 5:00 p.m. at St. Olaf’s church, 315 E 1800 S, Bountiful. You are also warmly invited to a 6:00 p.m. Rosary for the Schultz family immediately following the 5:15 p.m. Mass on Thursday, August 6, at the Cathedral of the Madeleine.
