Eric Werner ’62 has one heck of a streak going. Eric made his first gift to Holderness, a $10 donation, just before Christmas in 1968—and he hasn’t let up since.

From his mother’s persistence in getting him admitted to the teachers who challenged him to reach his potential, Eric recognizes that his success was built, in part, on the investment others made in him. Today, as a longtime donor and Class Agent, he’s paying that generosity forward.

Today, trustees, former chaplains, and members of the Holderness community gathered for a ceremonial groundbreaking marking the next chapter for our Chapel.

Beginning next spring, a renovation and expansion will allow our entire school community to gather together—preserving the Chapel’s place at the heart of Holderness while making space for the generations to come.

For generations, the Chapel has been a place to pause, reflect, share, and connect. Today, we celebrated the people who have shaped that tradition and a future in which everyone has a seat.

What if you could have a conversation with someone you’d never actually met?

For Holderness alumna Shannon Mullen '97, that question became the inspiration for a one-woman play imagining a meeting between artist Jamie Wyeth and President John F. Kennedy—two men navigating the expectations, legacies, and complicated truths that came with their famous families.

The play–An Addition of One–grew from years of research, conversations with Wyeth, and a growing willingness to trust her own artistic intuition. It also brought her full circle, back to the stage where her love of theater first took root at Holderness.

For Zahra ’27, her self-proclaimed nature phase meant waking before sunrise, grabbing snowshoes, and hiking to the Top of the World before the school day began.

Turns out, there may be more to that post-hike boost than a beautiful sunrise—the biophilia hypothesis suggests that our deep connection to the natural world is rooted in our evolutionary history.

At Holderness, nature is woven into everyday life, from walking paths and hiking trails to Outdoor Chapel and the intentional biophilic design elements of the Davis Center.
