Handwriting matters! ✍️

A Kentucky middle school is making a bold move for 2026–27: scaling back routine Chromebook use in favor of pencil, paper, discussion, and hands-on learning. Superintendent Brian Creasman cited student feedback and family input as drivers of the shift. Chromebooks aren't disappearing entirely — they'll still be used for state testing and targeted assignments — but the school is deliberately rebalancing toward analog tools and direct interaction.

This matters because the research keeps stacking up. Handwriting activates deeper neural engagement than typing. Face-to-face discussion builds critical thinking and social skills that screens alone don't develop. And students themselves are signaling fatigue with constant device use.

The question isn't whether technology has a place in schools. It does. The question is whether we've let convenience and standardized testing drive us toward screens as a default rather than a deliberate choice. When a school listens to students and families and chooses balance, that's worth paying attention to.
