🪱The three musketeers were back again for the Pre-K program. This week we learned about soil, took a little hike and turned over logs and rocks to see what we could find. 🐜

😊These kids are such a joy to teach I’m thinking about going back to school to get a degree in early childhood outdoor education. Doesn’t that sound like fun?

📸Picture it, Littleton 1990… sonething. It was summer vacation and I was reading the Childcraft Annual Plant Book The Green Kingdom,again (this book series was the best!) when I noticed a completely white plant. I read the description and thought how much I would like to see one but I didn’t know if they even grew in Maine. Later I went for a walk in the woods behind the house and sure enough I stumbled across one on a path I had walked 1000 times! Over the years I’ve learned a lot more about these fascinating plants! Join me this Tuesday July 21st for a nature program all about ghost pipes and the “wood wide web” Registration not required. $10.00 per family.

Did you know that there can be miles… miles! Of mycorrhizal fungi in a single teaspoon of soil? These threads of fungi, called hyphae, can be used by trees to share nutrients and even communicate! Scientists are finding that trees can send signals through the underground “wood wide web” to warn other trees in the area of predators or to share if they are in need of certain nutrients and other trees can respond by sharing those necessary nutrients if they have extra stored or secreting chemicals to ward off munching bugs. Ghost Pipes are plants that don’t have any chlorophyll, that’s why they’re white. So how do they get nutrients? They tap into the underground network and take it from surrounding plants!

📣I’m changing my open hours slightly for the rest of the month.

🌲Tuesday- 10-11 Pre-K class- (registration required $10.00), 3-5 Open, 6-7 Tuesdays at Twin Ponds (Family Nature Program, no registration required $10.00 per family)

🧪Wednesday- 10-11:30 Elementary class (registration required $15.00), 3-5 Open, 6-7 Wonder Wednesdays (Stop in to do a family science experiment, while supplies last $5.00 per child)

⏰* The only change is the amount of time the Nature Center is open to visit. If you had planned to visit next week earlier than 3:00 let me know and I can be there!!

🤗* I’m always happy to open by appointment at no charge! I know not everyone can visit during open hours. Often people have family up and will ask if they can visit. I love it! I would have it open 24/7 if I thought people would come. 😂

🐸Our Pre-K Family class was a ton of fun! The kids tested household objects to see if they sank or floated. Then we made our way to the pond and they picked up their own items to test in the water.

🚢When we got back to the Nature Center they made bark boats with found items. They all did a really good job! Thank you to everyone who attended! ❤️

🐸 Up early playing in the pond this morning.

I mean, gathering organisms for today’s Puddle Jumpers class. 😆

🌧️. Where did yesterday’s rain drops💧 go? We’ll learn about how water moves through a watershed, look at some organisms that live in a healthy body of water, test different items to see if they sink or float and make nature boats!

🤗 I can’t wait!!
