This fall, one of our ninth graders made the move from Sanford Middle School to Upper School. Here’s how it’s going:

“I felt ready for the transition to Upper School and excited about the new opportunities high school would bring, but I was a little nervous about the workload and adjusting to a new environment. After my first week, I realized the transition was not as difficult as I expected. Being familiar with campus helped, and having a fresh start was actually exciting. I enjoyed meeting the new students who joined my grade, and I like the independence that comes with Upper School, like being able to walk around campus at lunch. Sanford Middle School prepared me well for this next step.”

Earlier this October Sanford families, students, and faculty gathered for our second annual Cultural Community Day.

Families shared their heritage through food, crafts, and artifacts, with roots reaching from Italy, Pakistan, Australia, and Taiwan to Wisconsin and Arkansas. This year also kicked off a new tradition: the One Community, Many Colors Color Run/Walk, hosted by the senior class, which sent participants through Chapel Valley in bursts of colorful powder.

“Tasting foods from Puerto Rico to Bulgaria and dancing with my peers to a Greek arrangement reminded me how fortunate we are to belong to a community as diverse as Sanford’s” shared Neha Khan ‘27.

If you were in the stands that night, you remember this shot. The girls had already won the state title, and the boys needed a three to make it a sweep. Deon Jones ‘11 hit it with seconds left.

This Homecoming, the 2010–2011 boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will be inducted into the Sanford Athletic Hall of Fame. They’ll be joined by fellow inductees James Paxson ‘66 and Beth Webster ‘86, Alumni Award recipients Ryan Struthers ‘06 and Susan Lin ‘96, and Carol Cowie ‘71, recipient of our inaugural Sanford Arts Award.

“We have three children in Sanford’s Lower School, and our whole family has felt welcomed into a very special community since day one. My daughter’s first complaint during her first week was that it was the weekend. She wanted to keep going to school!

The teachers and staff make each child feel known, appreciated and capable, creating a true sense of belonging. The curriculum is strong, but what’s so unique is how the children are encouraged to learn through play and following their own curiosity or exploring within a team.

I am excited for my kids to grow up in a place that will challenge their intellect, encourage them to participate in many different kinds of activities, and prepare them to be good leaders and kind people in our rapidly changing world.”

Throwback to Club Fair, when the quad filled with students checking out Model UN, Mock Trial, Future Business Leaders of America, Robotics, Math League, Engineering Club, and more. With nearly 40 clubs meeting throughout the rotation, there was plenty to explore.

SEAL is one of our longest-standing clubs, but the list grows every year. Newer additions include Vinyl Club, Baking Club, and Fishing Club, which meets down at the pond. Students also write for Lit Mag, give back through Service Club, and serve in Student Government.

This year’s school-wide theme is Set Your Path, and our clubs are one of the best examples of it in action. Many of our favorite clubs were started by students with an idea, and if something’s missing from the list, there’s a good chance a student will start it next!

Homecoming is almost here! 💙💛

Join us Friday, Oct. 16, and Saturday, Oct. 17, for two full days of Warrior spirit.

Friday brings Day in the Life sessions, an alumni lunch, our pep rally, Middle School and Upper School games, food trucks, and an evening of student and alumni performances in the Geipel Center for Performing Arts.

Saturday kicks off with a pancake breakfast, the Cross Country 50th Anniversary Fun Run, and the Thelma Miller Memorial Alumni Basketball Game, followed by our Alumni Awards and Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony at 10:00 AM. Stick around for Upper School field hockey and soccer, campus tours, and the Family Fun Zone.

In celebration of our schoolwide theme, Set Your Path, we are sharing reflections from Sanford alumni on the experiences and opportunities that have shaped their journeys. We begin with artist Damian Saunders ’96, who reflects on discovering a passion for art at Sanford, and where that passion has taken him since.

“For me, Sanford’s motto, ‘No talent lies latent,’ rings true. Sanford School helped me discover a hidden talent for the arts that had always been there–just like the great Michelangelo said about his famous marble statues. The beauty was already inside the marble; I was just lucky enough to unveil it for people to admire what was always there. Sanford was my Michelangelo, allowing me to shine and share my love for painting with others.

When I was in the Upper School in the ’90s, Sanford had art majors, and I was an art major my junior and senior years. The moment I knew art was going to be a big part of my life was when people outside of the art building started taking notice of my paintings and wanted to buy them. For example, my French teacher, Madame Solan, commissioned me to create a painting for her husband, a chef, when I was in 10th grade. I also had the opportunity to apply for the Scholastic Art Awards, and my senior year, I won the highest honors: a regional Gold Key and a national Hallmark Award! To put it in perspective, that’s like Sanford’s basketball teams winning the state championship in the arts sphere! If I could go back and tell my younger self something today, it would be this: Failure only happens when you stop trying. There will be roadblocks and hurdles throughout life, but keep going! You are writing your own story!

My Sanford School experience helped me write that story, positioning me to catapult my success in the art world and beyond. Returning to Sanford School to help with the Artists Collective at Sanford is so special. It’s a full-circle moment in my life.

The Sanford School community helped make me into the man I am today. I love giving back to Sanford because Sanford gave so much to me through my education, my love for the arts, and the community I found here.”

It wouldn’t be eighth grade at Sanford without a trip to Washington, D.C.!

Students walked the National Mall, visiting the World War II, Korean War Veterans, and Vietnam Veterans memorials, put their detective skills to the test at the International Spy Museum, and made a stop at the National Zoo.

Seeing these places in person gives students a new perspective on what they study in class, and it’s a trip our alumni still talk about years later. A great way to kick off their final year in Middle School!

Seventh grade spent their week at Camp Horizons!

Students learned how to build a fire, tried their hand at archery, explored caves, took on the climbing wall, and got out on the water rowing. Every activity came with a new challenge, and they worked through each one together, cheering each other on and figuring things out as a team.

Time outdoors like this gives students a chance to build confidence, try something unfamiliar, and get to know their classmates in a whole new way. They came home tired, a little muddy, and closer as a grade.
