Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, marking June 19, 1865, when news of freedom finally reached enslaved African Americans in Texasโover two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Itโs a day of reflection, honoring the resilience of our ancestors, and a reminder of the ongoing journey toward justice and equality โ๐ฝโ๐พโ๐ฟ
As sisters and siblings of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., we would like to honor this important day by educating ourselves and others, amplifying Black voices, and supporting the fight for equity. Letโs stand together in solidarity and continue the work towards true freedom for all๐ป๐

Our first Pride Month Spotlight is Marsha P. Johnson. โ๐ฝ Marsha was born on August 24, 1945, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, into a working-class, religious family. Assigned male at birth, Johnson began to express her gender identity at a young age, often wearing dresses, which prompted bullying and violence from other children. Despite hiding her authentic self due to societal pressure, Johnson moved to New York City immediately after graduating high school with little more than the clothes she was wearing. There, she found solace and community among other LGBTQ+ individuals and adopted the full name Marsha P. Johnson - the โPโ stands for โPay It No Mind,โ which is what Johnson would say in response to questions about her gender.
Marsha P. Johnson was a prominent figure in the gay liberation movement of the 1960s and 1970s and dedicated her life to advocating for the rights and visibility of transgender individuals and the LGBTQ+ community. Her contributions to the fight for equality, her role in the Stonewall Uprising, and her revolutionary activism have solidified her legacy as a trailblazer in the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ+ rights.
Stay tuned for next weekโs Pride Month highlight! ๐

๐ป May is Mental Health Awareness Month ๐ป
This year, we are focusing on the impact our worldโs constant change has on us and how it can be overwhelming to deal with everything going on around you, but most importantly, in your thoughts. While a stigma still exists when talking about oneโs mental health, society is doing a better job at discussing the topic. What should we aim to focus on this month? Accept yourself as you truly are, hold yourself accountable for your accomplishments and celebrate them, and, most importantly, create a self-care routine to support your overall mental health and well-being in your daily life. Live in the moment!
