BEEKEEPERS, NOW WOULD BE A GOOD TIME TO GO OVER YOUR PRE AND POST DISASTER APIARY PLANS

•Trim trees, shrubs, or remove any hazards. Remove overhanging branches, trees, or debris that pose a risk of falling on hives, access points, or areas of travel within or to/from apiary locations

•Raise up hives or move hives away from flood prone areas, have hive stands or pallets with beehives ready to be secured (keep additional pallets or blocks on hand for these situations)

•Have extra straps, rope, or any hive securing material ready

•Stock up on additional supplemental syrup and pollen feed for post storm

•Clean up apiary site of loose or extra equipment

•Have additional fuel for vehicles, equipment, and power tools ready

•Make sure to have power equipment working and ready to use (chainsaws, power tools, batteries for power equipment, generators, tractors, vehicles, trailers)

•Have chains, heavy duty straps, or any other load bearing material in case of equipment become stuck or need to use to pull debris on hand ready to use

•Make extra room at other apiary site in case of emergency placement

•Make sure all farm vehicles, tractors, trailers, and equipment are secured safe and ready to use post storm (also secure vehicles and equipment from theft)

•Make a plan with employees/workers pre storm with duties and responsibilities for post storm work in case communication services are down

•Take pre storm documentation, photos, and accurate notes of each apiary location’s inventory and land conditions

•Make sure your insurance, crop insurance, and any additional coverages are up to date and correct for post storm documentation or claims

•Stock up on water, snacks, or any other provisions for employees to have during post disaster work conditions or field work

The person who accidentally shorted me the $10 on the honey purchase paid it back as it was an error on their part. Thank you for correcting it.
