Video Self-Modeling is a positive, research-based method for teaching children with autism using a technique called Feedforward. This allows children to see a future self who is performing better or behaving more appropriately. Only positive imagery is used and adult input is discouraged. It typically requires some editing of video footage, which is no longer difficult given the ease of use of new

editing software. Please share your experiences with VSM! I began my VSM research in 1993 and started working with kids with autism in 1996. Most of my research has been with that population. Based purely on the number of research articles, I am the leading researcher in the world on this technique, although I give total credit to Peter Dowrick for spearheading work on VSM. I also follow the work of Melissa Bray, Tom Kiehl, and others doing work in this area. I am also a big fan of Anthea Naylor and Shawn Spence in Australia. They are educators who have done more with classroom application of VSM than anyone I am aware of.
