(PRESTON) Hello, everyone! Long time, no hear from me. It’s been a busy year!

I wanted to give an update on what I’m doing and how I’ll be doing my scheduling going forward.

I’m still tutoring, and I’m still focusing on 6th - 12th grade & early college math classes (along with freshman-level Accounting courses). I haven’t gone anywhere! :)

I’m still working in an online-only capacity. This works out best for me as I can schedule clients closer together if needed without having to figure in travel time to and from clients.

CHANGES TO SERVICES
I have decided to limit my teaching work to only providing instruction and giving homework. If you are a parent/guardian homeschooling your child, I can teach the curriculum and give homework if you’d wish, but grading homework, giving and grading quizzes & tests, and keeping records will be the responsibility of the parent/guardian. The parent/guardian will still be responsible for enrolling the child in an accredited homeschool association, umbrella school, or other online education program.

I’ll continue tutoring and providing assistance in the following:

* 6th - 12th Grade math (including Algebra II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and Statistics)
* Freshman-level math (College Algebra, Statistics, Pre-Calculus, Calculus 1)
* Freshman-level Accounting (Business Accounting and Managerial Accounting)

STAYING ONLINE
I’ve decided to keep Hamill Homeschool & Tutoring as a majority online business. Over the past few years, I’ve found there’s not much from in-person tutoring that I can’t do through Skype or Zoom by Screen Sharing the work on my screen and the student sending pictures of their work to me so I can see how they’re working on and learning the material. As well, I’m no longer restricted to a specific goegraphical area; from California to Maine, Alaska to Hawaii, I’m available to anyone anywhere within my available times.

Which that’s a good segway to...

GENERAL AVAILABILITY
I’ll be making myself available during 2 blocks of each day, up to 2 clients per block. A “client” can be multiple students on the same call (example: Your child and their friend are in the same class, and everyone involved is fine with having both students on the call at the same time).

My general availability, given by earliest and latest start times for a 1-hour session, will be as follows:

BLOCK 1: 10 AM – 12:15 PM

BLOCK 2: 2:45 PM – 5:15 PM

These may be adjustable depending on client availability, and I may change these up at any point without warning, especially around the start of each semester (typically January and August/early September).

CURRENT AVAILABILITY
As of the writing of this post, I already have a few slots taken. Times and numbers of slots that are still available right now are (times given as the earliest and latest start times.):

MONDAYS
Block 1: 10:00 AM – 12:15 PM (2 slots)
Block 2: 2:45 PM – 3:00 PM; 5:15 PM (1 slot)

TUESDAYS
Block 1: 10:00 AM – 12:15 PM (2 slots)
Block 2: 2:45 PM – 3:00 PM; 5:15 PM (1 slot)

WEDNESDAYS
Block 1: 10:00 AM – 12:15 PM (2 slots)
Block 2: 2:45 PM – 3:00 PM; 5:15 PM (1 slot)

THURSDAYS
Block 1: 10:00 AM – 12:15 PM (2 slots)
Block 2: 2:45 PM – 3:00 PM; 5:15 PM (1 slot)

FRIDAYS
Block 1: 10:00 AM – 11:45 AM (1 slot)
Block 2: 2:45 PM – 5:15 PM (2 slots)
* Friday’s Block 1 availability is different due to a current client’s scheduling needs

You may see a repeat post in about a week. I'll be posting this information to my website, and I believe it's set to automatically post here.

"11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will overwhelm me, And the light around me will be night,” 12 Even the darkness is not dark to You, And the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to You." -Psalm 139:11-12, NASB Good morning, everyone! I hope you've all been doing well through these past few difficult months. [ 330 more words ]

I hope this new post finds you well! This is a quick update on my plans for continuing online tutoring and getting back to in-person sessions. Chattanooga will start re-opening public spaces on Friday, May 1st, 2020 with precautions such as social distancing and the needs for masks, gloves, and sanitizers. I will take a very cautious approach to resuming in-person tutoring sessions (with online sessions always available). [ 399 more words ]

As I hear the President wanting to get business going back again by April 12th, I figured it best to say what I plan on doing.

Hamill Homeschool & Tutoring will follow the most restrictive of CDC guidance, Tennessee state guidance, or local city/county guidance regarding social distancing. As such, for the foreseeable future, I will meet via online means only. This is for everyone's safety as we see how the COVID-19 situation is handled and how it spreads as time goes on.

Thank you all for your understanding, and I apologize for any inconvenience this causes.

I'd like to welcome all parents to the world of online/distance learning!

While technology is a wonderful thing to keep students going when they otherwise couldn't be in class, it's also not ideal for some students for a number of reasons:

1) Perhaps the teacher is only providing notes and worksheets, so there's no direct instruction. Some students (myself included "back in the day") need to see and hear what's going on to understand the material better.

2) Your child may have a low attention span (well...lower than normal). Online learning, especially when students are left to do it thsemselves or with little monitoring, can give a false sense of time security. "Oh, I've got plenty of time for that!" Yes, perhaps...until it's all due the day you get back.

3) To feed back into the first point, perhaps the teacher did provide some form of instruction, like a YouTube video or they've recorded their own lessons. However, without live feedback, perhaps the student finds it difficult to know if an idea they have about the material is right.

4) Finally, videos tend to be static. By that, I mean the teacher on the video generally teaches one method for tackling the material at hand. Because they don't get live feedback, sometimes this is all the teacher does and leaves it up to the student to learn that method, which may or may not make sense to your child (or even you!).

I offer live Skype math help sessions to students from 5th grade up through Freshman-level college courses to help smooth out the rough spots or to teach the material provided by your child's instructor. I don't use a web camera; I do talk with you and your child via audio chat, and I show work on essentially a digital white board at all times. I can then send those notes/work to you after each session.

I'm offering an introductory discount: New clients signing up pay $15 per hour for the first 3 hours of sessions through the remainder of the COVID-19 closures (ending when your school system starts back). Beyond the 3 hours is my standard pricing if you wish to continue afterward

Feel free to Facebook Message or E-mail me ([email protected]) to talk about what I may be able to offer to help you make this new, unexpected venture a tad easier, at least for your math curriculum.

In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, here’s my official stance on the situation:

1) With the Chattanooga Public Library closing as of tomorrow until further notice, I’ll be doing online appointments if clients choose to do so. This should allow us to continue and keep you or your child on track while keeping everyone isolated enough to not run additional risk of infection.
* I will not be using a we**am, but I do have the capability to show work on your screen and can E-mail those notes after the session or later in the day.
2) Payment for services will be done via PayPal or CashApp. Clients can text or message me directly for that information.
3) If anyone is not comfortable doing online appointments, or should anyone get sick during this time, cancellations are also fine.

This practice will most likely continue until the Chattanooga Public Library re-opens. If easing of suggested restrictions happens prior to the Library reopening, we can arrange to meet elsewhere in Hixson for in-person sessions until the Library reopens.

I pray for protection on everyone. Only do what feels comfortable for you. Let me know if I can help in some way to keep your or your child’s academic progress going despite the closures and cancellations.

(Preston) Good day to everyone reading this! I hope your semester has started off well. If not...well, I'm here! If your child is struggling in Math content, anywhere from a 5th grade level to being a freshman in college, I'd be happy to talk with you about helping them achieve their personal best result in their Math subject.

My schedule is posted on my website. You'll see what times I currently am not available; click on each "busy" time to see how long that particular appointment runs. I tend to work in 1-2 hour segments, so if you notice a time frame open (not marked as "busy"), feel free to inquire about it when we talk.

I work in-person or online, so location doesn't have to be a concern if you can't travel (or travel far).

Let me know if I can be of assistance. Otherwise, have a great semester! :)

Below is the calendar listing for what appointment times I currently have scheduled. Appointment times may not be exactly 1 hour due to either travel needs or the appointment itself being scheduled…

(Preston) A big thanks to our military veterans for their service. I am able to do what I love freely because of what they've done to ensure our freedoms.

09/25/2019

(Preston) Hello, everyone! I just wanted to give a quick update. I'm not gone or out of business. To the contrary, my late afternoon slots are just about full! Mondays and Fridays will be the best bets for scheduling. Homeschool families can still inquire about mornings and early afternoons. I hope everyone reading this is doing well, but feel free to contact me if you're in need of any math educational services. :)
