🍎 Rebecca's Go-To Therapy Item: A Play Kitchen & Play Food! 🍔

A simple play kitchen is one of the most versatile tools for building speech and language skills—and it can be used nearly anywhere!

🗣️ Practice conversational turn-taking
"What would you like?"
"I'd like a hamburger, please."

🎯 Target speech sounds
Choose foods that include your child's target sound. For example: tacos, tomatoes, or tea for the /t/ sound.

💬 Build language skills
Expand vocabulary by naming foods, sorting them into categories, describing colors, sizes, textures, and talking about favorites.

📚 Strengthen early literacy and phonological awareness
Play games by finding foods that start with the same sound, identifying beginning sounds, or thinking of rhyming words for each food item.

The best therapy often looks like play! With a little imagination, a toy kitchen can help develop communication, speech, language, and early reading skills—all while having fun.

🗣️ Megan's Go-To Therapy Tool: Tongue depressors & and Mirror!

These are some of my favorite therapy tools because it provides a clear visual for teaching correct tongue placement and oral movements, before targeting a specific sound.

How I use it:
👅 Practice correct tongue placement with the mouth open, without a sound.
⬆️ Work on tongue elevation and side-to-side movements while keeping the jaw stable, building lingual strength.
💪 Build body awareness by maintaining control without moving the hands, head, or feet during oral motor exercises.
🪞 Increase oral awareness by asking questions like:
What did your tongue feel?
What did you notice when you looked in the mirror?

Developing oral awareness and body control lays the foundation for more accurate speech production, making articulation therapy more effective and efficient!

✨ Kimberly’s Go-To Therapy Item! ✨

One of my favorite therapy tools is surprisingly simple—a dry erase board, markers, and affix cards! This hands-on activity makes learning more engaging while helping children build reading and language skills.

Together, we use them to:
💙 Practice reading and spelling longer, multisyllable words
🌈 Color-code prefixes, suffixes, and base words to make word parts easier to see and understand
📖 Grow vocabulary by learning the meanings of word parts
🧩 Build morphology skills by creating new words from familiar ones
📝 Practice using different parts of speech in meaningful ways

When learning is more engaging, children are often more motivated, more confident, and more excited to practice their skills!

* 🎨 Play-Doh + Speech = Double the Fun! Turn playtime into speech practice without your child even realizing they're working!

* 💥 Practice Speech Sounds
* Roll little Play-Doh balls and "SQUISH!" them while your child says a target sound, word, or short phrase.
* Target the /k/ sound with fun phrases like:
* "Make it!"
* "Take it!"
* "Cut it!"
* "Look! It's a..."

* 🌈 Build Vocabulary While You Create
* Talk about:
* 🎨 Colors ("It's blue!")
* 📏 Sizes ("Big snake! Tiny ball!")
* 🔷 Shapes ("Let's make a circle.")
* 🤲 Actions ("Roll, squish, stretch, flatten!")

* 👂 Boost Listening Skills
* Give simple directions like:
* "Hand me the bear tool first."
* "Now give me the duck."
* "Can you find the star next?"

* 🔤 Grow Early Reading Skills (Phonological Awareness)
* Make 3 tiny Play-Doh balls—one for each sound.
* Tap each ball as you say:
* 🐱 Cat: /k/ ... /a/ ... /t/
* Then squish them together to show the sounds blend into the whole word: cat!

* ✂️ Try the Reverse!
* Start with one big Play-Doh balland pinch off a piece for each sound:
* 🐶 Dog: /d/ ... /o/ ... /g/
* This helps children hear that words are made up of individual sounds.
