Day 3 of Wild About STEM Summer Camp at McGarity was “A 🐋 Whale of a good time”! Ms. Dunn, Ms. Garrett, Ms. Klemzak, Mr. Bearden and the campers reviewed what they have learned about animals. Then, they learned about Animal Careers! 🐴Students learned that there are many careers for those that want to help animals (not just veterinarians). Students learned about zookeepers and their duties, then engineered chutes to drop food to their “zoo animals.” Students also learned about the roles of marine biologists and how they protect some water animals. They created “protective barriers” to keep whales safe while using Legos engineering. They learned about Wildlife rescuers and built zip lines to “rescue animals.” Campers also met a drone pilot, who talked about how drones can be used to help animals: Video/photos of new animals or of migration, to get a view of animals while protecting the land, to search for lost or displaced animals after a natural disaster, to protect animals from poachers (unauthorized hunters), and to help farmers to count their animals. Campers also compared different features of sea turtle bodies to learn about 7 sea turtle species. Soon, it was time to bid new friends goodbye. Students were given a commemorative t-shirt and a Certificate of Completion! They also left with a greater understanding of the Animal 🦓 Kingdom! Thanks, Ms. Dunn, Mr. Bearden, Ms. Klemzak, and Ms. Garrett for supporting the next generation of scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians! Until next time.. 🦒 🐾 ☀️

Day 2 of Wild About STEM Summer Camp at McGarity was “Owl-standing”! Ms. Dunn, Ms. Garrett, Ms. Klemzak, Mr. Bearden and the campers reviewed life cycles of common Georgia animals and animal classification. Then, they went Wild About Birds! 🦅 Students learned that those who study and become experts on birds are ornithologists. We also invited a professor from Georgia Highlands College, Sharryse Henderson, to teach us about birds because she is an ornithologist. Campers compared bird eggs, bird feathers, bird skeletons, and bird beaks. They played games to imagine themselves using different beaks. They also learned about different bird habitats and their diets. They learned where some birds fit into the food web. Campers even learned some bird calls. Then, students learned about owls and used scientific tools to dissect owl 🦉 pellets to determine what was in the owl’s diet. Students also created pinecone bird feeders to take home and got their own binoculars in hopes of seeing birds later! Thanks, Ms. Henderson! Here’s another feather 🪶 in your cap! 🐦 🐾 ☀️

Day 1 of Wild About STEM Summer Camp at McGarity was the bee’s 🐝 knees! Ms. Dunn, Ms. Garrett, Ms. Klemzak, and Mr. Bearden welcomed campers from all across the county! Today, campers imagined themselves as animals, compared pets to wild animals, learned about pollinators, discovered animals that live under a log, and found out which animals are bioluminescent! They also met McGarity’s pet rabbit, Belle. They learned how solar energy helps us to take of her and how she helps take care of our garden. (Thanks, Ms. Adkins and Ms. Henderson for helping with Belle!) Students also created pollinators, demonstrated cross-pollination, used scientific tools, and used creativity and Squishy Circuits to model bioluminescence! 🐰 🐾 ☀️
