SCS is constantly looking for new strategies to recruit and retain new teachers. This includes exploring the various options for certification. Austin Thomas is one of our teachers who pursued certification via "Option 4," which is by Praxis Score and coursework. We are so thankful he decided to return to the school system that he grew up in and give back! Mr. Thomas has proved to be an amazing young educator. We have no doubt he will continue to faithfully serve the students of Summers County for decades to come!
A word from Mr. Thomas:
After being given the opportunity to long-term substitute, I knew I had found where I was meant to be. With guidance from our central office, I discovered the WVDE Alternative Certification Program and completed Option 4 through Marshall University—Go Herd!
The program was affordable, flexible, and manageable while beginning my teaching career. Through graduate-level coursework in classroom management and curriculum and instruction, along with support from my professors, administration, and central office, I gained valuable knowledge and practical skills that have helped me become a more confident and effective educator for the students of our county.
I’m excited to return for the 2026–2027 school year as a certified teacher! This pathway strengthened not only my love for teaching, but also my love for learning and has inspired me to continue my education by pursuing a master’s degree. I’m incredibly thankful that West Virginia provides alternative pathways that allow people like me to turn an unexpected passion into a career serving our students and community."
