When big feelings become too much, your child may need less stimulation, fewer demands, and more support🫂💛

During a meltdown, the goal isn't to "make it stop" as quickly as possible. Instead, focus on helping your child feel safe and supported while their nervous system works toward regulation. Every child is different, so what helps one child may not work for another. An OT can help identify sensory and regulation strategies that are individualized to your child's needs.

Before children learn to speak fluently or coordinate complex movements, they play!🛝🧸🖍️
As pioneers of child development like Jean Piaget noted, play is the exact mechanism children use to learn new skills. In our clinic, we use purposeful play as the foundation for both occupational therapy and speech therapy.

🧸Through OT play, kids build physical coordination, sensory processing, and fine motor skills.
🧸Through Speech play, kids build communication, vocabulary, and social interaction skills.

✨ Is your child ready to build new skills through play? Contact us today to schedule an initial consultation!

Is your child's speech developing as expected? 🗣️✨

Speech sounds don't all develop at the same time! Some sounds are typically mastered early, while others often develop later. These age ranges are guidelines, not deadlines. Every child develops at their own pace, and a variety of factors can influence speech sound development.

If your child is difficult to understand, becomes frustrated when communicating, or seems behind compared to these milestones, an evaluation by a speech-language pathologist can help determine whether extra support is needed. Early intervention can make a meaningful difference!

Does your child chew on shirts, pencils, toys, or just about everything? 🦷

For many children, chewing isn't simply a habit—it's a way to regulate their bodies, stay focused, or cope with big emotions. Instead of trying to eliminate the behavior, it's important to understand what's causing it and provide safe, appropriate alternatives.

These 10 tips can help you support your child's sensory needs while keeping them safe. If chewing is frequent, intense, or interfering with daily activities, an occupational therapist can help identify the underlying cause and create individualized strategies.

You may hear your child's OT talk about "heavy work"...but what does that actually mean?
Heavy work activities activate the muscles and joints by pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying, climbing, or crawling. These movements provide proprioceptive input, which can help many children feel more regulated, improve body awareness, and prepare for learning and play.

Heavy work doesn't require special equipment! Everyday activities like carrying groceries, pushing a laundry basket, climbing at the playground, or helping with chores all count.
If you're wondering whether heavy work could benefit your child, talk with your occupational therapist about strategies that fit their individual needs.

A weighted blanket can be one tool that supports regulation by providing calming deep pressure input
💤😌✨
This input may help children become more aware of their bodies, settle their nervous system, and prepare for activities that require focus or relaxation. Keep in mind that weighted blankets aren't a one-size-fits-all solution. Every child's sensory needs are unique, and what helps one child may not help another. Your occupational therapist can help determine if a weighted blanket is appropriate and how to use it safely as part of your child's individualized sensory strategies.

At ColorAlong, we focus on finding the tools and strategies that help each child feel regulated, engaged, and ready to participate in the activities that matter most
