Thanks to Cyndi Bonani and the families who came out to help harvest the garlic last night. We also w**ded, watered, and planted some beans where the garlic had been growing.

Hi PRS families - come join us at the PRS garden tomorrow, Tuesday July 12 at 5:30 to pull the garlic. The garlic was planted last November by 2nd graders and it's finally ready to be harvested and dried for next year's Harvest Lunch! All are welcome! Hope to see you there!

We had a very successful salad harvest party at Plymouth River School Garden today and we are so grateful to the Hingham Cultural Council and the Plymouth River School PTO for their support! The PTO has been funding the garden curriculum enrichment program in partnership with Holly Hill Farm for many many years and the salad party was a new idea for this spring. The Hingham Cultural Council is providing support for these parties at all of the Hingham Public Schools elementary schools. Thanks also to the very helpful Hps Foodie food service staff and several Plymouth River School PTO volunteers for their help as well! So many kids munching on healthy salads today!!!

It's been a very busy spring in the PRS garden! The garden education curriculum enrichment program started in early April when 4th graders planted sugar snap peas to learn about the jobs of the different parts of a plant. That was followed by 1st graders planting radishes and potatoes to learn about the genetic diversity in nature. We planted 3 different types of radishes that were harvested in early June. 3rd graders did a math lesson in the garden and partitioned a rectangular garden bed into a grid and planted salad mix seeds and today, the 5th graders harvested 17 pounds (yes, 17 pounds!) of lettuce from the garden. The greens will be served at lunch on Friday. 1st graders learned about the life cycle of plants and they planted sunflowers from seeds that we saved last fall and 2nd graders planted a 3 sisters garden - corn beans and squash. Lots of great hands on learning is happening at PRS this spring!

Yeah, the PRS garden education program is back in the swing of things this school year! So far in September, the 3rd graders harvested and weighed the potatoes they planted last spring - nearly 30 pounds! And the 1st graders had a 4 senses tour of the garden and got to see the sunflowers they had planted last spring. And the 4th graders learned a little bit about soil science and compost and planted kale. The 3 sisters garden is looking really good and all grades have had a chance to see the beautiful rainbow corn, beans and squash. More to come this fall!

The PRS garden is looking really great right now and we’re ready to begin another year of teaching in this lovely outdoor learning space. The garden has been receiving some much needed care this summer from many families who have generously donated their time to w**d and care for this beloved resource! Not too much watering needed this summer because we had lots and lots of rain. Thank you to ALL who helped all summer long! PRS’ garden education program is generously funded by the Plymouth River School PTO and a huge shout out to them for their support! Yesterday afternoon another group of helpers did some more w**ding and removed a beautiful, but invasive nonnative butterfly bush. We planted many varieties of native seedlings provided by Blue Stem Natives in Norwell to help provide habitat for many varieties of caterpillars and pollinating insects. Thank you to the Hingham Cultural Council for providing funding to make this native planting event happen! Anyone who would like more information about why planting natives is so ecologically beneficial, please reach out and I can send some information!

Yeah! The school year ended on a happy note for the PRS Garden. I had a chance to teach science, social studies and math in the garden with students in kindergarten, grades 1, 2, 4, and 5. Kindergartners learned about the life cycle of plants from seed to seed, and planted a long row of sunflowers in the garden. First graders did a new lesson to learn about the genetic diversity of life and then they planted 2 very different looking kinds of radishes. We went back to the garden and harvested a LOT of beautiful radishes that we washed and bundled up to send home. 2nd graders weighed chunks of "seed potatoes" prior to planting. They will harvest the potatoes in September, weigh what's harvested and use the data to make a graph. 2nd graders also learned about (and planted) the clever Native American companion planting technique called a 3 sisters garden. 4th graders learned about the different parts of a plant including the beautiful kale flowers that were blooming in the garden and planted more kale that will hopefully be eaten as kale chips for harvest day next fall. And the 5th graders did a community service project to snip off the garlic scapes that were later donated to a local food pantry. They also did some very helpful w**ding in the garden. Thank you to all the teachers for flexibility in scheduling these lessons on short notice - it was fun and educational for all!

After a LONG time away from the PRS Garden during COVID-19 restrictions, today was a great - if slightly wet - day in the garden w**ding and preparing for teaching again this spring. Thank you to PTO parents and several helpful students.

Last week Cyndi Bonani and her two young friends came to the PRS garden to help harvest the garlic planted by 2nd graders last November. Maybe we’ll be able to have a garlic bread feast next fall again like we’ve done for the past many years. We couldn’t access the garden all spring so it doesn’t have the usual things planted by students - potatoes, salad greens, kale, and more! But there is tons and tons of milkw**d which is so great for the monarchs.
