🧘 We may not have set the Guinness World Record for most-elementary-school-students-doing-yoga-at-the-same-time...but we certainly set Derby's!

Led by second grade teacher Betsy Alvord—who brought the flourishing and still-growing yoga program to Derby four years ago—Grades 2–5 gathered in McKelvey Gym to start their morning relaxed and energized. Mrs. Alvord led students through a warm up, flow, some balance challenges, and shavasana to help center them and guide them to set intentions for the day ahead.

Care to join us behind the scenes?

Our seventh and eighth grade Stagecraft students are preparing the set for our upcoming Grade 6 musical! In addition to using hand and power tools to construct the set, students also run the backstage crew and the tech booth during the production.

Constructed with students about eight years ago, current students are repainting the "periaktos," classic Greek scenery used to have quick transitions of up to three different places. They are also creating several pieces to evoke a waterfall and bohemian jungle elements...any guesses as to what the sixth grade musical could be? 🌴🌺🐻📖🌺🌴

As a bonus, students are using the jig saw to cut out a drawing they made of an apple tree. This will become a lollipop tree at the Fall Fair on October 24th—keep an eye out for a sweet treat! 🍭

WHAT LED ME TO TEACHING...
I was always into sports and had some very caring and impactful teachers, so I majored in physical education.

MY TEACHING STYLE...
It has evolved over the years from a “command” style to a "demonstrator-coach" style. As a visual learner myself, I appreciate seeing how things are done. In PE and Athletics, students learn best when they hear about a skill, see a demonstration, practice, get the appropriate feedback, and then reapply it.

HOW I WITH MY STUDENTS...
In PE we strive for each student to reach their potential through a variety of games, activities, and challenges. Whether it's as simple as tag or a more complex group challenge, we stress cooperation, fair play, teamwork, and acceptance of others.

FAVORITE ELEMENTS OF MY JOB...
I really enjoyed developing the cross country program when I first started at Derby. We had close to 30 runners some years. I enjoy coaching in our interscholastic program—especially lacrosse and basketball. In PE, it’s great to watch students progress through units like jump rope, fitness testing, and batting skills.

STUDENT MEMORIES...
There are way too many to just pick one. They come from basketball victories, the lacrosse goal just after a timeout with the clock running down, the pictures from LS students that are all so special. One vivid memory: several years ago, our boys cross country team took the top three places at the prestigious Grade 6-9 Roxbury Latin Invitational.

HOBBIES OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL...
I enjoy cycling and still get out to surf occasionally.

I WISH THE COMMUNITY KNEW...
I have four fantastic grandkids. I grew up and went to Boston Public Schools. All three of my kids attended Derby.

One of my favorite teachers was in sixth grade, Mr. Visser. Once a year, sixth graders played a kickball game between the two homerooms and a lot of the school would come out to watch the game. It was our Super Bowl!

What a great first day of Grade 5 "Connection Crews!"

During their FLEX periods this year, intentionally small fifth grade groups built around unlikely pairings and students who may not typically interact will meet for dedicated building sessions. In creating these groups, the goal was to separate students who tend to cluster together, mix academic and social groups, vary personalities and activity preferences, and create a balanced mix of strengths within each crew.

Sessions will focus on working through recurring social issues using conversation and problem-solving, building school spirit through guided activities, playing collaborative games, and strengthening connections that contribute to a positive school environment.

Today, our fifth graders spent their first Connection Crews meetings getting to know one another, discovering shared interests, and celebrating the unique strengths each person brings to a group. Through creative challenges, teamwork, and plenty of laughter brought on by the student-favorite game "Keepy Uppy," students practiced listening, collaborating, and building new connections.

This year, we're going to be shining spotlights on student-athletes who give their all.

🏑 Hunter is a defensive anchor for the Varsity Field Hockey team, known for her toughness, grit, and unwavering commitment. The ultimate team player, she's always willing to do whatever her coaches and teammates ask to help the team win. Her ability to bring out the best in everyone with her positive attitude sets her apart.

"To me, being a team captain means having good sportsmanship, going beyond to help during practice and games, and, most importantly, being a good teammate. Being a captain of a Derby team is an honor and something to be proud of." —Hunter '27

⚽️ As a team captain, Luke leads not only with his voice, but also through his actions—supporting his teammates while making sure everyone feels included and heard. Luke values different perspectives and always puts the team first. His versatility is another strength: he can step into goal or make an impact on offense whenever his team needs him.

⚽️ Kasia is off to a blazing start for Girls Varsity Soccer. She played an integral part in the team's opening win against Notre Dame Academy: playing all 60 minutes, scoring two goals, and helping lock down skilled opponents to preserve the victory. No matter the sport, Kasia puts her heart and soul into everything she does.
