Tantrums are normal. Tantrums are actually… healthy. Yes! It’s true.

Kids come into the world fully able to feel… but not at all able to regulate their strong feelings. And so, what happens with this big gap? Tears. Yelling. Meltdowns. Tantrums.

If (and when) you encounter a meltdown today, you may think, “Why are you crying? You’ve had such a fun day!” or “Why are you acting this way?”

Two Things Are True: Halloween can be a fun day for kids… and an emotionally overwhelming day for kids.

Yes there’s candy, classroom celebrations, time with friends… and there’s routine disruption, over-stimulation, sugar rushes (and crashes). All that to say, it makes sense that our kids may be more prone to dysregulation.

And perhaps most important to remember during a meltdown is this: “My job as a parent is to keep my child safe and keep my body calm. My job is NOT to end the tantrum.”

Love this idea for our students heading off to kindergarten soon!

For our PreK and Kindergarten mamas...
Practice eating “school lunch” with your kiddo. Make sure they can open everything you send with them. Talk about not eating off of the table in the lunchroom!!! Set a timer for 15 minutes and talk about how they may not finish eating and that’s ok. (This was HARD for some.) Practice packing everything back up and talk about what is trash and what should come back home in their lunch box. PreK or first time Kindergarten lunch is a big adjustment and your child’s teacher will be super appreciative if you have prepared them for the experience!
