Just passed to me by an educator friend:

TLDR version:

BILL 1807 IN SENATE
If this passes , it will eliminate Artists in the Schools
Hearing is Tuesday, March 19th
Get your testimony ready now!

****

Aloha Artists in the Schools Ohana of past and present,

I have some potentially bad news to share. It sounds like the State Senate is going to be hearing the bill 1807 as early as next Tuesday, March 19th. They will most likely let us know last minute when the bill will be heard, so we ask that if you would like to submit testimony, to write and prep it NOW . We encourage you to reach out to your students as well to submit testimony and/or call their senator, as it will affect Artists in the Schools, Professional Development for teachers and teaching artists, and any future arts education programming

IN THIS POST:
1) What you can do
2) What is the bill
3) Example Testimony
4) Please spread this information widely.

1) WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Contact the Senate TCA Committee members to demand they not hear this devastating bill. Here are their contacts

Lorraine Inouye, Vice Chair

When the bill gets scheduled to be heard, submit testimony and if at all possible, attend the hearing in person or via zoom.

WHAT IS THE BILL:
If it passes as it is, it will cut our funding by 68%. From my understanding, most of the remaining funds would go toward payroll. This means:

No APP Artists in the Schools, and because the other general funds would have to go elsewhere, we would maybe have $40,000 (or five residencies) that could be funded

Capitol Modern: The Hawai'i State Art Museum would shut down July 1 and be used for storage of art
There would be no new commissions/ we would not be buying new works of art, because in the bill it states that we already have enough art.

Here is the more thorough explanation of what may happen:
They state that any remaining funds that the committee has will go towards arts education and performing arts. However, with no guarantee on how much money that is, it is very unlikely that it would be the almost one million dollars that we use for arts education each year

Repeals capital improvement appropriations for renovations of state buildings as a source of funds for the works of art special fund. Introduced by Representative Kyle Yamash*ta (Maui) this bill would cut 68% of the Art in Public Places program revenue, adversely eliminating government support for many arts organizations, programs and individual artists statewide. The bill states that the SFCA has enough works of art and there is no need to acquire more art for the state collection.

The elimination of “renovation” from the percent for art law would eliminate monetary support for the following:

Aloha,

My name is _____ and I strongly urge you not to hear bill 1807. The capital improvement appropriations for renovations of state buildings is a large amount of funding that the State Foundation receives, that would directly impact __[my income/programming at my school]__.

Thank you for taking my perspective and opinion into consideration.

ʻO au nō, me kaʻoiaʻiʻo,
___your name___

Super pleased with how well the hau came out from the dehydrator! It’s perfectly dried, still flexible, and smells wonderful!

Photos from Kumu Leilehua's post 02/19/2024

In the old days, we did not harvest hau during the rainy season. It would be harvested during the heat of the summer, when going down to the shoreline, or the riverside would be a lovely and pleasant Way to get out of the heat then, once the fibers were stripped out, they would dry quickly in the hot summer breezes.

Today we have to deal with modern calendars and don’t necessarily have the option to choose the time we would like to harvest. Thus, harvesting during this past week’s rains.

So, I thought I would try something new this year, instead of losing a bunch of my hau to mildew. I put it in my dehydrator!

It’s starting to dry quite nicely, and the fragrance is just lovely! It’s a little bit reminiscent of fresh cut straw. 🥰
