Congratulations to 🥇 Jason Jiang, 🥈 Jonah Caldwell, and 🥉 Ryne Shimooka, who were announced as the top three winners in the Grades 5-8 category of the 2026 Maunakea Coin Contest — an annual event for K-12 students on Hawaiʻi Island, organized by the Maunakea Astronomy Outreach Committee.

Jason's design was drawn from the unique perspective of Lili‘uokalani Gardens in Hilo, showcasing both the mountain's and the garden's beauty. Judges loved Jonah's underwater scene that blended sea life with the sky, and Ryne creatively incorporated Hawaiian motifs into the 2026 lettering.

Congratulations to 🥇 Stella Phelps, 🥈 Adwaita Ferdous, and 🥉 JJ Fox, who were announced as the top three winners in the Grades K-4 category of the 2026 Maunakea Coin Contest — an annual event for K-12 students on Hawaiʻi Island, organized by the Maunakea Astronomy Outreach Committee.

Stella's design — which came in second place overall for all age categories — is "a great reinterpretation of Herb Kāne's Poliʻahu painting," with "rich texture and depth." Adwaita, the youngest medalist of the competition, had a "strong and cohesive" and harmonious composition. Judges loved JJ's concept of the observatory resting within a bird's nest like an egg, "symbolizing new discoveries emerging from Maunakea."
