Art belongs to everyone.

Discover the creativity, talent, and diverse perspectives of Deaf, hard of hearing, and disabled artists at the AHA! Art Immersive at the Wailoa Art Center in Hilo. This interactive exhibition celebrates accessibility, inclusion, and the many ways art can be experienced.

The Art Immersive is open to the public daily from July 3 through August 5, 2026, with certified ASL interpreters available during Saturday interactive sessions to help make the experience welcoming and accessible for everyone.

One featured presentation is an American Sign Language interpretation of a segment from Disney's Fantasia ("The Soundtrack"), demonstrating how ASL can artistically express sound, music, rhythm, and conversation through visual language.

This ASL interpretation is presented for educational and informational purposes as part of the Abled Hawai'i Artists - AHA AHA! Art Immersive exhibition. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by The Walt Disney Company.

As an ASL enthusiast, teacher and interpreter, I find that ASL is truly for anyone and believe that anyone can learn to use sign language, if they want to. Such is the beauty of language, learn and practice and apply, while having a great interaction in doing so! Sign on! 🤙 - - Dano

HAPPY is signed with an open-B handshape and is a symmetrical movement. NEW is signed with a slightly curved open-B handshape and has an asymmetrical movement, where only the dominant hand does the movement and the passive hand is static. YEAR is signed with an S-handshape and is also an asymmetrical movement, where the passive hand is static and the dominant hand revolves around the passive hand. Each of these signs are signed using both hands. A sign is considered symmetrical when both hands share the same movement. Happy New Year from Hawai'i and Hauʻoli makahiki Hou! 🤙 🤟

HANUKKAH is signed with both hands, using the 4-handshape. The Palm orientation for both hands faces away from your body. You begin the sign with the index fingers (and thumbs) touching one another and the movement separates with a slight underarch, depicting eight candles. Even though there are nine candles slots on a Hanukkah menorah, both hands are representing the eight candles for the 8 nights of the festival. 🕎

Wishing you a chag chanukah same'ach (a happy Hanukkah). Hanukkah runs from sundown on Thursday, December 7th through sundown on Friday, December 15th, in 2023.
Hanukkah is celebrated in various ways, including lighting one candle each night for eight nights, it is often referred to as the Festival of Lights! 🕎🤟🤙

I've enjoyed interpreting music and signing songs in ASL for many, many years. Here is a signed version of a song that I interpreted on stage with Michael Franti. At the time I was practicing with a friend of mine and we shot this video during rehearsals for the Michael Franti concert. Enjoy!

Dano Kaufmann Interprets into Sign Language the song "Say Hey (I Love You)" by Michael Franti & Spearhead. This is the take 2.
