Seasonal GS-9 Archeologist position through the National Park Service. This position will support cultural resource management and preservation work along the trail corridor and associated park lands on Hawaiʻi Island.
Duties may include archaeological survey and documentation, GIS data collection, monitoring and compliance support, trail and historic property preservation projects, and collaboration with Native Hawaiian communities, lineal descendants, and partner organizations.
This is a great opportunity for individuals interested in Hawaiian archaeology, historic preservation, trail stabilization, and community-based stewardship work.
This position is eligible under the Department of the Interior’s new Field Unit Local Hiring Authority (P.L. 119-74), which allows DOI to directly appoint qualified individuals living within the local vicinity (Hawaiʻi Island) into this GS-9 National Park Service position, giving preference to local hires.

POSITION TITLE: Archivist (part-time)
DEPARTMENT: Archives / Collections and Exhibits
JOB SUMMARY: Is responsible for management and administration of all aspects of the Museum’s Archives as well as records management for the Museum. This position reports directly to the Curator of Collections and Exhibits.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
o Provides limited reference services to internal and external customers by granting access, interpreting finding aids, giving instruction on the proper handling of materials, and providing knowledge of the archival collections relevant to the individual researcher’s needs. May respond in person, by telephone, or by e-mail. May refer researchers to other resources, as needed.
o Processes new acquisitions and additions to the Archives.
o Processes and collects fees for Archives services from customers.
o Maintains and preserves archival collections to appropriate conservation standards. Preserves archival materials by identifying endangered materials and level of conservation work needed; provides basic repair and preventive preservation.
o Implements Museum’s records management system and procedures.
o Maintains archival collections management information, including up-to-date shelf list inventory and transfer records.
o Provides archival and general assistance in developing both permanent and special exhibits.
o Prepares photos from the John Howard Pierce Photography Project collection, for weekly submission to the Hawaii Tribune-Herald for publication and community assistance in identifying the photos’ subject matter.
o Trains and supervises volunteers and/or interns in the Archives.
o When directed, researches grant sources and helps write grant proposals to aid Archives/Collections and Exhibits.

AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE MAY BE CONSIDERED IN SUPPORT OF THE FOLLOWING:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Minimum Educational Requirements: Earned B.A. in History or other relevant field. M.L.I.S. desirable. Knowledge of Hawaiʻi’s history and culture, prehistoric to present day.
Minimum of 2 years’ experience related to the following responsibilities:
Experience in archival processing and administration; knowledge of contemporary archival and records management principles and practices, local research tools, and finding aids. Strong research capabilities.
Knowledge of descriptive cataloguing principles, MARC 21 format, and archives use of the Internet; knowledge of Encoded Archival Description (EAD) and HTML.
Experience using various archival tools and equipment, such as book scanners, video converter, and microfilm.
Training or experience in conservation of archival materials.
High level of competence in computer database management, word processing, and Internet use; knowledge of relevant software programs such as Past Perfect and Microsoft Word.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
Excellent attention to detail and accuracy with strong organizational and prioritization skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and duties simultaneously, and to work equally effectively with minimal supervision and in a team setting.
Physically able to read small fine print, retrieve and return archival artifacts from various types of shelving or storage, carry heavy boxes, or other manual efforts required to fulfill responsibilities. Able to lift 35 lbs. and to climb ladders.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks, talk, and hear.
Occasionally stand, walk, write by hand, lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects weighing up to 35 lbs.
Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, crawl, climb, reach or work above shoulder height, and grasp forcefully.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work may occasionally involve exposure to mold, dust, and chemical residues.
Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday during normal business hours. A part-time work schedule will be arranged.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
Pay range: $16.82/hour--$17.97/hour

UH Hilo, College of Arts and Sciences, Anthropology Dept., tenure-track, full-time, general funds, permanent, nine-month appointment to begin approximately January 2025, pending position clearance and availability of funding. Duties
Teach graduate and undergraduate anthropology courses with a specialty in environmental
anthropology with an emphasis on community-based Pacific collections management and material conservation. Develop an active program of research that would incorporate the management and analysis of collections in the Department of Anthropology at UH Hilo. Provide service to the department including advising students and mentoring student clubs. Contribute to program development.
Minimum Qualifications
PhD at the time of application from an accredited college or university in Anthropology or a related field with a primary focus on human-environmental interactions in Oceania. Experience with collections in Indigenous and multi-cultural communities and evidence of good teaching skills. Demonstrated experience with community-based research.
Desirable Qualifications
Evidence of successful college level teaching in a multicultural environment. Qualitative and quantitative skills. Commitment to a program in empirical research and education. Skills complementing those of existing faculty for contributing to a Heritage Management M.A. degree program focused on the Pacific Islands. Ability to contribute to the Pacific Islands Studies Certificate Program including teaching upper- level courses on Oceania.

We help our clients navigate regulatory compliance processes and provide an integrated historic preservation program to assist in overall planning from design to mitigation. Pacific Legacy has an immediate opening in our Kailua, O‘ahu office for an archaeological technician.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Anthropology;
Minimum one year of prior experience in cultural resources management (CRM) or related field;
Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and regulations applicable to historic preservation (e.g., HRS Chapter 6E, Section 106, National Environmental Policy Act, Archaeological Resources Protection Act, Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act); and
Technical writing skills and experience preparing archaeological reports and figures.
The ideal candidate is able to:
Perform archaeological monitoring, pedestrian survey, test excavation, and data recovery excavation;
Collect data using high-precision GPS receivers and Esri programs including Survey 123, ArcGIS Online, and Field Maps;
Work collaboratively with fellow staff members;
Conduct lab work;
Research, write, and analyze archaeological data at a sufficient level to produce high quality reports;
Assist with consultation efforts involving Indigenous communities, regulatory agencies, and other key stakeholders;
Use software platforms including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access. A working knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and/or ArcGIS Pro is a plus; and
Work in remote areas with rough terrain and changing weather conditions for extended field sessions as necessary.
