Today, on Earth Day, let's take a moment to consider what scripture says about stewarding creation.⁣
⁣
For one, we know that God gave man "dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and all the living things that move on the earth" (Genesis 1:28).⁣
⁣
At the same time, we know that God placed mankind in the garden "to cultivate and care for it" (Genesis 2:15). He also tells the Israelites that "the land shall not be sold in perpetuity, for the land is mine; for you are aliens and tenants with me" (Leviticus 25:23). ⁣
⁣
The picture we get from Scripture is this: God has created all things, and humanity is meant to use the things of the earth for our sustenance. However, we are given "dominion" not so we can selfishly "dominate" creation, but so that we can help it to flourish and thrive. Rather than hoarding natural resources for ourselves, we should ensure they are shared with all, including future generations. The earth, after all, is not an object to be exploited. But nor is it an idol to be preserved for its own sake. Instead, it's a gift to be stewarded, ⁣
