For this week's Hillsdale History Friday, we take a snapshot of tuition, room, and board for incoming freshmen in 1966-67. According to the College catalog, the total cost for the entire academic year was $2,190 for men and $2,150 for women. That included daily maid service and the $270 dining hall charge. There was also an additional $30 charge to receive the yearbook, Collegian, and admission to all home athletic events. Students could also rent the College organ for 50 cents an hour.

Summers are the busiest time of year for some Hillsdale staff. The great news is that the Alumni Office is working 12 months a year to engage and inform our approximately 18,000 living alumni. Vietnam War veteran Duane “Dutch” Van Fleet, '73, served in combat operations in South Vietnam. The U.S. Marine participated in numerous combat patrols and operations. Wounded twice during combat operations, he returned home from the war and attended Hillsdale College, graduating with honors. He returned to active duty as an officer, participating in combat operations in Operation “Sharp Edge,” Operation Desert Shield, and Operation Desert Storm. A decorated war hero, he retired from active duty in 1998 and was recently honored with the 2026 Elizebeth Smith Friedman Freedom Award. For this week's Hillsdale History Friday, before there was the Collegian, there was the Hillsdale Herald. The College newspaper dates back to the 1870s and had an eclectic variety of news. Elon Reynolds from the Class of 1866 was listed as "alumni editor" in the April 17, 1879, edition. There were also class editors and a "theological editor." The issue included news of Professor Ransom Dunn addressing the Amphictyon Society and President Durbin conducting a Bible reading at the College Baptist Church. An ad in the paper declared Hillsdale College to be "Christian," "Thorough," and "Cheap," boasting 15 full-time professors on staff and "the finest buildings in the West."
