July 4th marked the 250th anniversary of the approval of the Declaration of Independence by the first Continental Congress.

50 years later, the bricks were laid to build our historic Eagle Lodge building right here in Hillsborough, NC.

We are very proud of our nation's history, as well as the history of Hillsborough and our beloved Lodge building.

Don't miss this public event on Saturday, February 28. Dr. Friend will discuss his latest book and after his talk you can purchase a copy for him to sign. Thanks to our friends at The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough for supporting this event.

Please join us on Saturday, February 28th at 2pm for a discussion with Dr. Craig Thompson Friend, the author of Becoming Lunsford Lane: The Lives of an American Aeneas. This talk is hosted by Eagle Lodge No. 19 and supported by the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough. Eagle Lodge no 19. is located at 142 W King Street in Hillsborough, NC. This talk is free and open to the public.

This talk explores the remarkable life of Lunsford Lane, an enslaved man who purchased his freedom, became a well-known speaker and abolitionist, and challenged the limits of citizenship and race in nineteenth-century North Carolina. Drawing from his groundbreaking biography, Dr. Friend examines Lane’s rise to fame, his collaborations with leading abolitionists, and the resistance and violence he faced, offering a powerful portrait of a man navigating freedom, identity, and survival in a deeply divided America. Copies of Becoming Lunsford Lane will be available for purchase.
