One field taking a hit is computer science. In fact, U.S. undergraduate enrollment in computer and information science at four-year colleges fell by more than 8% in the fall of 2025, with the decline continuing into the spring of 2026, according to the National Student Clearinghouse.

Myth 1: SAT scores should not be submitted unless they are extremely impressive.

The truth is that applicants can decide, for colleges that are “test optional,” whether or not to submit their SAT scores. A helpful tool in making this decision is the website niche.com, where students can view the SAT range of accepted students. At Rutgers-New Brunswick, for example, it’s 1310-1500. At Princeton University, it’s 1510-1580. If you’re in the range, then submit your scores.

The college application process has grown increasingly complex in recent years, leaving applicants and their parents unsure about what information they should believe and what they should ignore.
