In 1866 Hawaii, a leprosy diagnosis meant exile to Molokai—8,000 sent to die alone, most of them Native Hawaiians.

White residents were quietly sent to mainland hospitals.

The only treatment, chaulmoogra oil, was torture—burning, blistering, and useless.

Born in 1892 Seattle, Alice was a prodigy.

First Black woman to graduate in chemistry from the University of Washington.

First to earn a master’s from Hawaii.

At 23, she became Hawaii’s first female chemistry instructor.

Asked to make chaulmoogra oil usable, she realized its healing compounds were trapped in thick molecular structure.

She made them water-soluble, injectable, and absorbable.

December 1916: she cracked it.

Patients improved, families reunited, exile camps could empty.

Weeks later, during a gas mask demonstration, it “malfunctioned.”

Alice inhaled pure chlorine gas and died before publishing her results.

Her white department head, Dr. Arthur Dean, seized her notes and claimed the discovery as the “Dean Method.”

Not one mention of Alice.

His stolen cure saved millions for 80 years.

Alice was buried in an unmarked grave.

In 1922, Dr. Harry Hollmann credited her as the “Ball Method.”

The medical establishment ignored him.

Only in 1999 did the University of Hawaii acknowledge her work—with a plaque.

A chemist who handled dangerous compounds daily suddenly forgot how to use a gas mask?

She was about to be celebrated as a Black woman who cured the incurable.

Instead, she became another erased genius so a mediocre man could rise. 09/08/2025
