Grow Appalachia is a community-based gardening resource program based out of Berea, Kentucky; High Rocks serves as a satellite site for the Pocahontas County area. Grow Appalachia is presented in partnership with Berea College with grant support from the Pocahontas County Convention and Visitors Bureau, (304) 799-INFO (4636), 301 8th St, Marlinton, WV 24954. The total cost of the Growing Renewed Opportunities for Workers in Appalachia (G.R.O.W Appalachia) program is $5M, and includes Farm (Ruby Grow and Grow Appalachia), Tech Express, and Workforce Trainee programming. $1.5M (30%) is funded through the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration Grant, and the remaining $3.5M (70%) of the program is funded by allowable federal and non-federal funding.

🌱 Reminder! Our next Grow Appalachia Garden Planting Workshop is coming up Tuesday, May 19 at 5:30PM...and we’ve got a new location for it!

đź“Ť Join us at 123 Elm St. in Hillsboro for an evening of gardening tips, hands-on learning, and free supplies to help your garden thrive.

If you missed the last class, arrive 30 minutes early for a quick makeup session. Don’t forget to bring a soil sample from your garden so we can help you grow your best season yet! 🌿🥔🌼

Participants will receive garden supplies, plant starts, fertilizer, and more.

WVU 4-H Project Spotlight: Home Food Preservation Project

Have you ever wanted to enjoy fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs long after harvest season? Through the WVU 4-H Home Food Preservation Project, youth learn how to safely preserve foods while building valuable kitchen and food science skills!

4-H members explore hands-on techniques like:
🥫 Canning fruits, pickles, jams, and sauces
❄️ Freezing fruits, vegetables, and meals
🌿 Drying herbs, fruits, and vegetables
🔥 Pressure canning meats, vegetables, and soups

These projects follow USDA food safety guidelines and include hands-on activities in which youth learn about nutrition, menu planning, and the use of preserved foods in recipes.

Welcome to the official page for High Rocks Education Corporation’s Grow Appalachia program 🌱

We’re excited to announce that we are now recruiting participants for our 2026 Grow Appalachia program, presented in partnership with Berea College. This is a free, 6-workshop program offering hands-on gardening and farming education for all experience levels, from beginners to advanced growers.

Each workshop includes kids activities, and participants receive basic tools, seeds, plant starts, and helpful growing resources at no cost.
