✨ Meet the Magic Makers – Magic Maker Monday! ✨
🦸‍♀️🦸‍♂️ Spotlight on our HCA Hero: Jennifer Morris 🎶🎭

We’re celebrating the amazing people who make Hillsboro Charter Academy shine, and today we’re excited to feature Jennifer Morris, our talented Music Teacher, Choir Director, and Theater Director, who has been part of the HCA family for 2 years and an educator for 32 years!🌟🎼

Jennifer’s passion for teaching comes from her love of showing students how music connects to everything. She believes music is not just an art—it’s a powerful bridge to subjects like math, science, history, and language arts. Through music, students can experience learning in a deeper, more connected way. 🎵📚

One of the things Jennifer loves most about working at HCA is the supportive community of colleagues who work together to help scholars grow and thrive. She values being part of a team that is passionate about creating meaningful learning experiences for every student. ❤️

🎭 Favorite HCA Memory
While Jennifer says new favorite memories happen every week, one standout moment was directing the cast of Madagascar Jr.. Watching the students collaborate, practice, and bring the production to life—and then seeing everything come together during the evening performance—was truly pure magic. 🎭🎶✨

💡 The HCA Way
To Jennifer, the HCA Way means seeing the world in more than one dimension. It’s about intertwining music, art, math, science, language arts, and history so students develop a connected understanding of the world—linking the past, present, and future together through learning. 🌍

🔬 STEAM & E3 in Music
Jennifer incorporates STEAM and the E3 framework (Explore! Engage! Engineer!) by showing scholars that music doesn’t exist in isolation. Students explore the history behind a piece, engage with the mathematics of rhythm, and even investigate the engineering of instruments. Through these experiences, the arts help bring every subject to life. 🎶⚙️📐

Jennifer believes that while big productions are exciting, the small daily accomplishments matter just as much. Her proudest achievement is creating an environment where students experience those little “aha!” moments and grow their confidence step by step. 💡🌱

🏠 House: Amistad ❤️
Jennifer chose the House of Amistad because its core values of friendship and bravery are at the heart of everything she strives to build in the music room. Her favorite part of the House system is the way it encourages students and staff to uplift one another and build strong bonds within the school community.

✨ Fun Fact: Jennifer was a gymnast for 13 years! 🤸‍♀️

Outside of school, Jennifer enjoys gardening and cooking as ways to recharge. Whether she’s trying a new recipe for her husband Keith or relaxing in the garden with their three dogs, those quiet creative moments help balance her busy days at school. 🌿🐶🍳

💬 Favorite Quote:
“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything.” — Plato

🦸‍♀️ Teacher Superpower Wish:
Jennifer would love the ability to instantly show students their own potential—helping them see just how capable and wonderful they are before they even sing their first note. ✨🎤

💡 Advice for New HCA Team Members:
Celebrate the small everyday victories. Those little daily lightbulb moments are the accomplishments that truly matter. 💡

💚❤️💙🖤 HCA in Three Words:
Harmony • Cooperative • Arts 🎶

Thank you, Jennifer, for bringing creativity, music, and magic to our scholars every day! You truly are a Magic Maker! 🌟👏

✨ Meet the Magic Makers – Magic Maker Monday Spotlight! ✨
🦸‍♀️Spotlight on our HCA Hero: Marissa Tennant 🦸‍♀️

We’re celebrating the amazing people who make Hillsboro Charter Academy shine, and today we’re excited to highlight Marissa Tennant, our incredible 3rd Grade Teacher, who is in her second year with the HCA family! 🌟🍎📚

Marissa was inspired to become a teacher because of the powerful impact her own teachers had on her growing up. Math was challenging for her, but she had educators who took the time to help concepts make sense. Those experiences inspired her to help scholars tackle difficult topics from different perspectives and experience those exciting “lightbulb moments” when everything finally clicks. 💡✨ She is also passionate about ensuring every scholar has a safe, supportive place where they feel cared for and encouraged to grow. ❤️🏫

Marissa was drawn to HCA because of the school’s mission and vision, particularly the focus on educating the whole child. When she visited HCA, she quickly fell in love with the collaborative culture—seeing scholars work together across grade levels, the high level of engagement in learning, and the strong emphasis on hands-on STEAM experiences. 🔬⚙️🎨

When asked what she loves most about working at HCA, Marissa says it’s impossible to choose just one thing! She loves the passionate staff, the opportunity to collaborate closely with colleagues, and watching ideas come together during E3, where learning truly becomes magical. ✨ She also values that teachers’ voices are heard at HCA and that educators can help shape curriculum to best serve scholars. Above all, she loves the curiosity of HCA scholars and the way they think outside the box. 🚀🧠

🚀 One unforgettable HCA moment for Marissa was being part of the ARISS contact, when our scholars spoke directly with an astronaut in space. Watching scholars craft their own questions and seeing their faces light up when they heard answers from orbit made it a truly memorable experience. 🌎🛰️👩‍🚀

💡 The HCA Way
To Marissa, the HCA Way means believing anything is possible. When we dream big and collaborate, incredible things can happen. Bringing ideas together often leads to something even more powerful than what we could imagine on our own. 🌟🤝

🏠 House: Rêveur 🐺💙
Marissa was called to the House of Dreamers because of her belief that anything is possible. She also loves the symbolism of the wolf, representing loyalty, strong family bonds, intelligence, and a free-spirited nature. As Rêveur’s House Leader, she proudly shows her house spirit by wearing her leader jacket and bringing enthusiasm and excitement to every House event. You’ll always hear her cheering and howling along with her house — AOOOOOO! 🐺💙🎉

Her favorite part of the House system is seeing the passion and creativity of Rêveur scholars, especially when they turn their ideas into reality — like organizing the Rêveur Movie Night. 🎬🍿

✨ Fun Fact: Marissa performed in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with James Madison University’s Marching Band — Go Dukes! 🎺🎉🟣

Outside of school, she enjoys reading 📚, working out 💪, playing disc golf 🥏, and gaming 🎮 with her husband, as well as spending time with family. ❤️

💬 Favorite Quote:
“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” – Mahatma Gandhi

🦸‍♀️ Teacher Superpower Wish:

🚀 MISSION SPACE SWEEP: Clearing Cosmic Clutter-HCA Engineers Take on Space Junk! 🌎

This past Friday, Hillsboro Charter Academy scholars completed a weeklong DiscoverE Engineers Week challenge with Mission Space Sweep! ✨

The week kicked off on Tuesday with NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Aerospace Engineer Sam Treadgold introducing the real-world problem of space debris 🪐 threatening the International Space Station 🛰️ and future space missions.

Over the next two days, scholars worked in K–5 House Teams to design, build, and test satellites 🛠️ using the engineering design process. Each scholar had a special role:

• Kindergarten — Chief Intelligence Officer 🕵️‍♂️, identifying debris & giving the “Safety Go”
• 1st Grade — Flight Controller ✈️, piloting satellites (blindfolded!)
• 2nd Grade — Logistics Manager 📦, managing materials
• 3rd Grade — Public Affairs Officer 📣, leading the Shark Tank–style pitch
• 4th Grade — Structural Architect 🏗️, creating technical sketches
• 5th Grade — Project Manager 🧭, guiding teamwork and navigation

Scholars captured all kinds of “space junk” 💫: floating debris, shattered solar panels ⚡, lost astronaut tools ✏️, and defunct satellites 🪐 — while avoiding the active astronaut! 🚫

The week culminated Friday in a Shark Tank–style showcase 🦈 with real-world judges:
• Thom Eden, Principal Engineer, The Aerospace Corporation
• Michael Callihan, President, AEGIS.net, Inc.
• Deana Griffiths, Loudoun County Public Schools School Board Member and Marketing & Recruiting Professional

Teams competed for the “Light of Space Exploration” Prize 🌟 and House Points, showing innovation, teamwork, and real engineering skills.

We’re so proud of our HCA scholars for engineering solutions that make space exploration safer and more sustainable! 🛠️🪐

🚀✨

Note: This Engineering Design Challenge was created by our Dean of Curriculum/STEAM Specialist Mrs. Tucker. She was inspired to create an elementary version after attending sessions at the Space Exploration Educators Conference by Blue Origin and Melissa Pore/Sam Treadgold as well as attending an educator webinar years ago sponsored by The Aerospace Corporation. Thanks to all for sharing and sparking this real and relevant project for our scholars.
