I spent a little time watching this guy from my kayak this weekend. 😊

He definitely noticed me. Watched me. Kept an eye on what I was doing.

But he didn’t immediately decide I was a threat and fly away.

And somehow, while sitting quietly on the water, that felt like a pretty good reminder heading into Monday.

Not everything that gets our attention is a threat.

Sometimes we just need to notice. Pay attention. Stay curious.

And while we’re looking around for what might go wrong, maybe we should also be asking…

What opportunity is here that I might be missing?

Notice what’s around you.

What feels like a threat that might simply need your attention?

And what opportunity might you miss if you’re too focused on what could go wrong?

There’s a difference between being on high alert and being aware.

Look around. Pay attention. Stay curious.

There are clues everywhere.

I was trying to take a selfie. My grandson had other plans.

Just as I snapped the picture, he launched himself off the back of my friends boat. On purpose. To be funny.

Definitely not the photo I thought I was taking. But definitely the one I'm glad I got.

It made me think about how often we spend our lives trying to capture the "perfect" moment, while the best ones are the ones we never planned.

The unexpected. The unfiltered. The stories we will laugh about years from now.

Maybe today's reminder isn't about leadership or coaching. Maybe it's simply this:

Look up. Leave a little room for surprise. Some of life's best moments happen just outside the frame you were trying to create.

I use AI almost every day (but not in today's pic!)

Sometimes I need a quick answer.
A summary. A first draft. A place to start.

It’s incredibly useful.

But I’ve also noticed that faster we get answers, the easier it is to stop asking questions.

And sometimes… that’s exactly what we need. Other times, it’s exactly what gets in the way.

That’s where coaching is different.

A coach isn’t there to be the fastest source of answers.

A coach slows the conversation down just enough for you to notice what you already know… what you’ve been avoiding… what your intuition has been trying to tell you. That catch in your voice when a question strikes a nerve you may have been avoiding.

Because the goal isn’t dependence on an answer machine (literally).

It’s self-sufficiency.

The best coaching conversations don’t leave people thinking, "My coach is so smart.”

They leave people thinking,
“I didn’t realize I already had that in me.”

AI can help us think faster.

A great coach helps us think deeper.

There’s room for both.

The wisdom is knowing which one you need.

I've read a lot of performance reviews over the years, and it's not uncommon to see comments like:

• Needs to speak up more.
• Needs to think more strategically.
• Needs to take more ownership.

Those observations may be true. But they don't tell us much about why.

Every coach knows you don't improve the team by staring at the scoreboard.

* You watch the game film.
* You look for what created the result.
* You adjust the play.
* You coach the player.

Performance management should work the same way.

Instead of asking only, "How are they performing?" we should also ask, "What's getting in the way?"

✨ Do they understand what's expected?
✨ Do they have the skills and resources they need?
✨ Do they feel safe enough to take risks, speak up, or make decisions?

Sometimes the greatest opportunity isn't changing the person. It's changing the environment they're trying to perform in.

The best leaders don't just evaluate performance. They coach it.

Weekend Assignment ✅

☑ Laugh until your stomach hurts.

☑ Spend time with someone who doesn't care about your job title.

☑ Go outside.

☑ Forget what day it is for at least an hour.

☑ Leave one thing unfinished.

☑ Return Monday just a little more like yourself.

Leadership isn't only built during the workweek.
Sometimes it's built in the moments that refill us.
