While their classmates packed for dorm rooms this summer, ten Washington County area high school graduates spent the season earning a Class A CDL instead.

Through the Youth CDL Pilot program, we partnered with Northwest Regional Education Service District - Official to take them from a permit to a license in about two months at our Hillsboro campus. Several students had job offers waiting before their licenses even arrived in the mail.

Training at Elite follows a clear path.

It starts in the classroom, where students prepare for their permit and learn the fundamentals. From there, it moves out to the training range for hands-on skills like pre-trip inspections and backing. By the end, students are out on the road, driving a truck with an instructor right beside them.

Nobody mentioned truck driving as a career option when Samuel Salinas was in high school. He wishes someone had.

The trucking industry is facing a driver shortage, and companies across the country are actively looking to fill seats. Freight still needs to move, and qualified, licensed drivers are in demand in nearly every state.

That demand is exactly why hands-on training matters. Every mile logged on trucks like these, long before a student ever hits the road for a job, is part of what makes them ready to fill that need.
