On October 7th, the high school students from Luverne and Hills-Beaver Creek School Districts witnessed a mock crash designed to demonstrate the very real consequences of distracted driving.

The scenario walked through the initial 911 call and emergency dispatches followed by the arrival of family members and first responders including law enforcement, firefighters, ambulance crews, and ultimately the funeral home. One patient was transported by air ambulance, one by ground ambulance, and two victims were pronounced deceased.

Following the mock crash, students returned to the school for a speaker and a panel discussion with participants from the exercise.

It only takes a moment for everything to change. Put the phone down. Stay Focused. Make it home safely.

Thank you to the organizers and participants that made this possible: Luverne Public Schools, Luverne Fire Department, Rock County Ambulance, Sanford AirMed, Hartquist Funeral and Cremation Services, and community members

HBC Secondary welcomed Terrence Talley with Student Reach Minnesota today to share an encouraging message with our students. His presentation, “I Got Your Back,” for grades 6–8 and “Don’t Give Up” for grades 9–12 emphasized hope, resilience, empathy, and the importance of staying connected to others.

Terrence reminded students that many people care about them and that reaching out for help is a sign of strength. His message was warmly received by both staff and students.

As principal, I encourage families to continue these courageous conversations at home by asking:

“What message from Terrence stayed with you?”

“Who are trusted people you can turn to when life feels difficult?”

“How can you show someone that you have their back?” and

“What can we do to help you feel more supported and connected?”

Please take time to listen, and remind your students that they matter and that they do not have to face challenges alone.
