I was honored to present two special awards at our End of Year Awards Ceremony: the “Emerging Artist” Award and the “Creative Visionary” Award.
As an art teacher, I want my students to understand that skill alone is not what makes someone an artist. Effort, risk-taking, curiosity, and practice are often even more important. Great artists are willing to try new things, make mistakes, and continue creating.
This year’s “Emerging Artist” Award goes to a student who fearlessly explored every project I introduced — from painting a Donkey Kong arcade screen, to drawing classic horror film characters, to creating fishing poles and lures from polymer clay, a ceramic arcade game, and even sewing for the first time. He was never afraid to step outside of his comfort zone and try something new. I had the privilege of watching him truly work in his own creative space, and I believe we will absolutely be seeing his artwork in the future. This year’s “Emerging Artist” Award goes to Jacob Magalhaes-Rodriguez.
Our “Creative Visionary” Award goes to a student who has made the art room her second home. Since kindergarten, she has attended as many Art Clubs as her schedule allowed and has continuously shared her creativity, humor, and originality with others. Her digital artwork, Mona Lisa Doing the 6-7, became a fan favorite during this year’s art show because it was unexpected, funny, and entirely her own idea. Her digital illustrations reflect both talent and imagination, and I cannot wait to see where her creativity takes her in the future. This year’s “Creative Visionary” Award goes to Adelyn Bird.
I am incredibly proud of both of these students and excited to watch them continue growing their skills, using their creativity, and making the world a better place — one artwork at a time.
