Ramapo Saltbox

Ramapo Saltbox The Ramapo Saltbox ERC is an environmental research and educational facility located in Torne Valley in the Town of Ramapo, NY.

The Ramapo Saltbox ERC was a collaborative effort between Environmental Educator Chuck Stead and the Town of Ramapo to develop a field research center designed to examine the long-range impact of paint sludge contamination, the result of Ford Motor Company's dumping during the 1960’s and 70’s. The facility itself is a re-constructed saltbox "worker" house preserved from the Hamlet of Ramapo along

the Ramapo River -- the original saltboxes served as 17th-century Ramapo Iron Works factory housing. The Ramapo Saltbox ERC currently serves as an a job/skills and internship center for students from throughout Rockland County, from high school through graduate studies. The Saltbox has been the base for recent Ford Motor Co paint sludge clean up in Torne Valley, Hillburn, NY. The Saltbox effort also includes care for a Medicine Garden which is planted with Ramapough medicinal herbs.
