We had so much fun last week at the Highlands Nature Center blending theatre with history! Anne Van Curen transformed into Appalachian Trail thru-hiker Emma “Grandma” Gatewood in her one-woman show. Thank you to Highlands Biological Station for hosting us, Visit Highlands NC for sponsoring this event, and everyone who came out to hear the inspiring true story of Grandma Gatewood!

Author Laura Kumin served up a delicious taste of suffrage history today with a hands-on culinary demonstration inspired by her book, “All Stirred Up: Suffrage Cookbooks, Food, and the Battle for Women’s Right to Vote.” CLE members made three delicious recipes straight out of suffrage cookbooks: Jack London’s Stuffed Celery, “A Good Hors D’Oeuvre,” and Ginger Bread. Thank you, Laura, for sharing this fascinating corner of history with us, and thank you to the Cullasaja Women’s Outreach Grant for sponsoring this program! 👩‍🍳🗳️🍽️📖
