Mateo’s Book of the Month: Mother Bruce by Ryan T. Higgins

For this month’s book spotlight, Mateo chose his favorite story, about Bruce, a bear who does not like other small and cute animals. The only thing he really likes is eggs because he wants to eat them for dinner. But when he puts the eggs on his plate, one cracks open and turns out to be chicks, which makes him super mad!

The chicks start calling Bruce “mother goose,” which makes him even angrier. In the end, it sounds like maybe the beginning of a whole new story when a turtle hatches and calls him “mama” too!

Mateo loves all the funny moments and the silly surprises in Bruce’s unexpected adventure.

Happy Dolly Day!!!
Today, in a fun nod to Dolly Parton’s iconic anthem “9 to 5,” communities worldwide are gathering to celebrate the life and legacy of the beloved country icon. Following her passing last month at age 80, admirers everywhere are finding creative ways to honor her extensive contributions as an artist, philanthropist, and champion for children.

TL&LC was proud to join in the local festivities at Highlands School for Dolly Day! TL&LC brought the fun directly to students with Dolly-themed stickers, coloring pages, make-your-own bookmark activities, and inspirational booklets. It has been a great opportunity to celebrate Dolly’s vibrant spirit while continuing her passion for bringing the joy of books and learning to young readers.

Many thanks to The Rotary Club of Highlands for the opportunity!

The Community Center was filled with Bingo players who enjoyed flavorful tacos donated by Los Vaqueros while they played in the Rotary Club’s September Bingo night. Donna Jacques was the lucky winner of the Jackpot.

"We are deeply grateful to the Highlands Rotary Club for choosing The Literacy and Learning Center as the beneficiary for September's Bingo Night," said Bonnie Potts, Executive Director at TL&LC. "The proceeds from this event directly support our efforts to provide essential literacy services, including the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, our Pre-K and After-School programs, Individual Tutoring, Adult Education, ESL, and Citizenship Classes.”

A Huge Thank You to the Rotary Club of Highlands & Our Bingo Night Supporters!

The Literacy & Learning Center extends its gratitude to the Rotary Club of Highlands for hosting us as the beneficiary for September’s Bingo Night at the Highlands Community Center! We are equally grateful to everyone in the community who came out to share a meal, play a few rounds, and enjoy a fun-filled evening together.

Special thanks go out to Los Vaqueros for generously donating the delicious tacos for the event, as well as our fantastic event sponsors: Swift Accounting (Lucky Number Sponsor), John Bynum (Lucky Number Sponsor), Jane Jerry (Four Corners Sponsor), Jan and Dabs Potts (Lucky Number Sponsor), and Amy Cooper (Four Corners Sponsor).

Every dollar raised directly supports TL&LC’s free educational and literacy programs serving children and adults across Macon County. Thank you for your continued generosity and for investing in the power of learning for our neighbors!
