UESCA | Science-based endurance sports coaching certifications, educating the best coaches worldwide

We asked UESCA-certified coaches this question:

What's one thing you've learned from coaching that a textbook never would have taught you?

Here's what Coach Arturo Gonzalez shared:

"Not everyone who participates in sports is, or wants to be, an elite athlete—and that's perfectly fine. We're parents, professionals, students, and above all, human. Sport shouldn't compete with our lives; it should enhance them."

"Choose gratitude for the moment and in the journey ahead."

It's easy to focus on the next goal, the next race, or the next milestone. Growth often happens when we learn to appreciate where we are right now.

Every training session, setback, breakthrough, and lesson becomes part of the bigger journey.

Take a moment today to reflect on how far you've come and be grateful for the road still ahead.

We asked UESCA-certified coaches this question:

What's one thing you've learned from coaching that a textbook never would have taught you?

Here's what Coach Kristen Di Fate shared:

"Beyond writing training plans and teaching athletes about fueling, gear, and recovery, a textbook can't teach you the gratitude you'll feel when athletes trust you to be part of their journey."

Lactate is one of the most misunderstood concepts in endurance sports.

Often blamed for fatigue and poor performance, lactate is actually a normal byproduct of energy production that can serve as a valuable fuel source for working muscles, the heart, and even the brain.

Understanding how lactate is produced, utilized, and measured can help coaches and athletes make more informed training decisions and better interpret performance data.

UESCA contributor Michael D. Weiss breaks down the physiology of lactate, explains its role in energy metabolism, and separates common myths from scientific reality in this in-depth blog post.

Have you noticed how difficult it can be to have a conversation with someone who sees things differently?

When did thinking differently become the same thing as being on opposing sides?

Whether it's a debated endurance sports topic or something else entirely, consider choosing curiosity over criticism today.

It doesn't take much.
Different perspectives can teach us something.
And thinking differently doesn't make someone an enemy.

We can disagree and still be friends.

In this episode of the “All Things Endurance Podcast,” host Rick Prince chats with Dominique “Dee” Stasulli. Dee is a strength and endurance coach, a professor of physiology and pathophysiology, a current doctoral student, and UESCA’s primary content creator. Rick and Dee chat about what it means to be a professional coach and how it relates to all aspects of the coach-athlete relationship.

Below are the specific areas that Rick and Dee chat about during this episode:

✅ Please tell our listeners about yourself.

✅ How would you sum up professionalism in coaching in a few sentences?

✅ What are some of the most important aspects of professionalism in coaching?

✅ When it comes to professionalism, how does a coach balance friendship with an athlete and being their coach?

✅ How can coaches create and enforce policies related to coaching professionalism?

✅ When it comes to professional communication, what are some key examples?

✅ A lot of coaches feel that it isn’t super important to be on time, whether for an in-person coaching session, a call, sending a program, etc. What is your take on this?

✅ Do you view continuing education, staying current on recent research, and being aware of trends as an important aspect of professionalism?

✅ Could you discuss other aspects of professionalism, such as attire, language, body posture, and attention to the athlete?

✅ What are some other aspects of professionalism in coaching that we didn’t discuss?
