White on white is one of my favorite ways to keep a quilt light without making the fabric feel flat!

Isla is a 108-inch white-on-white backing from Benartex. From a distance it stays clean and simple. Up close, the printed texture gives the back a little more interest.

This is the kind of backing I would consider when I want the quilting texture to remain part of the finished quilt.

When stitches look good in one direction and fussy in another, many quilters go straight to the tension dial.

Before changing anything, I like to look at the whole setup. Thread path, needle, bobbin, quilt sandwich and the amount of tension on the fabric can all affect the result.

Your quilt should be secure on the frame, but it should not feel like a drum. A little patience at the beginning can save a great deal of unpicking later.

Bubbles Ocean is a good example of why I do not choose a backing only by trying to match an exact color.

It has layered aqua, turquoise, seafoam, and blue circles moving across the fabric. That means it can relate to several colors in the quilt top instead of depending on one perfect match.

I would especially like this behind a quilt with curved or flowing quilting because the two would work together rather than compete.

Owning a longarm is not the only way to get time at the frame.

I offer longarm rentals for quilters who want to finish a quilt themselves, become more comfortable before choosing a machine or simply spend a few focused hours quilting without bringing another project home unfinished.

Solid fabric does more work in a quilt than it gets credit for!

A good solid can give the eye a resting place, separate two prints that are competing with each other, sharpen the shape of a block or let the quilting become much more visible.

The Pure Solids fat quarters are the kind of bundle I would keep nearby when a quilt needs one more color but definitely does not need one more print.
