Painting 1 students have been working on finishing their first big painting project with split complementary color scheme. Their work changed a lot today; even from when pictures were taken! Can’t wait to see how they look and a couple more class periods.

The Yost Art Gallery is hosting “Made in Kansas,” an exhibition by Emporia print maker Stephanie Alaniz Sept. 14 to Oct. 23. The show is free and open to the public.

“We are excited to have Stephanie share their work with us at Highland,” said Brigitte Bruna, Highland Community College Art Instructor. “…an artist who utilizes multiple media in their work inspires our students to see what all can be created with materials in various ways. Their unique voice will enrich our campus.”

Alaniz received a Bachelor of Fine Art from Texas A&M at Corpus Christi in 2016, a Master of Fine Art from West Virginia University in 2019 and has shown all over the world including Egypt, France and Nepal. Alaniz teaches at Emporia State University.

Yost Gallery is named for Walter Yost, accomplished artist and teacher at Highland Community College who also served as the chairman of the Art Department until his retirement in 1977. Yost believed in educating people and helping them to see and appreciate the artistry in their environment.

The gallery is open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday with no admission fee. It can be found on the Highland Community College campus, 606 W. Main Street, Highland, Kansas, 66035. in the Jack D. Nutt Math Science Building.

The Guild showed some fabulous teamwork tonight during their art supply battle with reinterpretations of the Son of Man"and van Gogh’s Sunflowers. Teams were given random supplies, and they had to create an art object in 30 minutes with the prompt of "a famous artwork gone terribly wrong." A silly and creative time was had by all! Plus Fred Durst impersonations, birthday cake, and sardines to round out a fun evening.

The printmaking course course had a great semester learning different techniques. Everyone started their own art collection with a print exchange with their Seven Deadly Sins Drypoint. Advanced Studio also gave a demo on engraving. Bryson has been working on this technique in class to support his studies with engraving at Emporia.

Our ceramic artists this semester have been busy in the studio! Students in Ceramics I & II, and Advanced Studios enjoyed pushing each other in the classroom, throwing, sculpting, and formulating glazes! It always feels like Christmas when a glaze firing is unloaded from the kiln!
