There’s something new happening at Highland Middle School! Ms. Scott is sponsoring HMS’s first-ever poetry club, appropriately named “For Better or Verse!”

The club is student-led by Peyton Ogden and Abbigail Korpi, who recently kicked things off with their first meeting during lunch. Members will meet once a month during lunch to share their love of poetry, creativity, and writing.

What an exciting new addition for our poetry lovers at HMS! We can’t wait to see what “For Better or Verse” has in store!

Highland Middle School has been recognized by the University of Arkansas Office for Education Policy (OEP) as a “Beating the Odds” school for demonstrating outstanding student growth on the 2025–2026 ATLAS assessments!
These awards recognize schools across Arkansas that demonstrate high student growth in Mathematics, English Language Arts (ELA), and Science while serving student populations in which at least 66% qualify for free or reduced-price meals.

🏆 Congratulations, Highland Middle School!
🔬 High Science Growth — Northeast Region

This recognition is especially meaningful because it celebrates the academic progress of students who may face additional challenges and barriers to success. Rather than focusing solely on proficiency, these awards recognize how much students have learned and improved throughout the school year.
Our HMS science teachers are helping students develop critical thinking skills, explore new concepts, and discover the world around them through meaningful classroom experiences. This award is a testament to the hard work happening in our science classrooms and the commitment of our educators to helping every student make academic progress.

STEM Night was a fantastic experience! Our students and families had the opportunity to engage in various stations that challenged their critical thinking skills. They worked with manipulatives and collaborated to follow directions in order to complete tasks and push their abilities. Thank you to all our students and families who attended; we hope you had an enjoyable time!

Fifth graders are learning about artist Louise Nevelson and recycling old math manipulatives into found-object assemblages! After hot-gluing, they will spray-paint their work to create monochromatic finished pieces. Mrs. Riggs-Self is loving their enthusiasm and is proud of them for trying something new!

Reading is even better with a little sunshine!

Great weather makes you want to grab a good book and head outdoors, and that’s exactly what Mrs. Frame’s sixth-grade students did today! Students took advantage of the beautiful day by trading their classroom seats for some fresh air and sunshine while enjoying a little reading time.

Sometimes a change of scenery is all you need to make learning even more enjoyable! 📖🌳☀️
