The American Taekwondo Association (ATA) was founded in 1969 in Omaha, Nebraska by Haeng Ung Lee of South Korea. It is one of the largest taekwondo organizations in the United States, and in association with the Songahm Taekwondo Federation (STF) and World Traditional Taekwondo Union (WTTU), is one of the largest in the world. Songahm Taekwondo is the style of martial arts practiced at ATA affiliated schools. Songahm means "Pine Tree and Rock." According to the organization, the term Songahm itself represents "Evergreen strength the year round, long life and a symbol of unchanging human loyalty" as represented by the pine tree and the rock. Soon Ho Lee gave the name, Songahm, and its meaning to his brother, Haeng Ung Lee years before H.U. Lee founded the ATA. In the ATA, the student is compared to a growing pine tree, from a seed (white belt) to a massive tree (black belt). According to the ATA, practitioners of Songahm Taekwondo study poome sae (forms, a preset combination of offensive and defensive techniques, designed to simulate self-defense techniques being used upon multiple opponents), gyeo-roo-gi (sparring), one-steps (scripted sparring segments), self-defense, board breaking, weapons, and leadership. The ATA has a leadership program that allows students to work as junior leaders/instructors in junior classes. This helps the trainee instructors become qualified taekwondo instructors and earn the ATA title of Certified Instructor.

The Region ATA Academy is expanding again! We are now hiring coaches, teachers, and counselors who teach one or more of the following activities:

● Martial Arts
● Dance
● Cheerleading
● Soccer
● Basketball
● Flag-Football
● Dodgeball
● P.E. Type Games & Activities
● Arts & Crafts
● Theater/Acting
● Music
● K-5th grade educational activities

Our motto is "We are the BEST!" This means that we have the best kids, the best company, and of course, the BEST staff members! We offer paid training, free uniforms, and much more! To qualify for our amazing team, you must meet the following requirements:

- Must have a clean criminal background and pass a background screening.
- Must be over the age of 18.
- Must have experience working with children
- Must have reliable transportation.
- Must be enthusiastic and have a positive attitude for success! 🙂
- Must own a smartphone or computer for regular text and email communication.

This awesome job will have up to 4-5 hours per day at $13-$15 per hour. We also have several opportunities each year to earn commission and bonuses!

Dear School Town of Highland Community,

Due to the ongoing recovery efforts across Highland and Lake County, all schools will be closed the remainder of this week: Thursday, August 13, and Friday, August 14. The new first day of school will be Tuesday, August 18.

Teachers will now report for Professional Development on Monday, August 17. Students will report for the first day of school on Tuesday, August 18.

All back-to-school nights at our elementary schools have also been postponed to next week, and we will send out more information via email and our district website as they get rescheduled.

If your High School student attends the Area Career Center (ACC), please keep an eye out for a message from Highland High School for more information on the start of classes.

We also want to extend a massive THANK YOU to all the custodians, staff members, and community volunteers who have been assisting in clean-up efforts at our schools. We are very to have such a supportive and caring community that looks out for one another during difficult times.

As so much of our community is still without power, we sincerely hope that everyone continues to stay safe in the aftermath of recent storms.

The School Town of Highland will continue to monitor recovery efforts and provide more communication about the start of school as needed. Thank you very much for your understanding.
