Why do Montessori classrooms have mixed-age groups?

One of the most unique and beautiful aspects of a Montessori environment is that children learn alongside peers of different ages.

Rather than separating children strictly by age, we create a community where everyone has something to learn and something to offer.

Younger children are inspired by watching older children.
Older children build confidence, leadership and a deeper understanding by helping those younger than them. Every child progresses at their own pace, without the pressure of comparison or competition.
Children develop empathy, patience, independence and respect through meaningful daily interactions.

Just like in a family, learning happens naturally through observation, collaboration and shared experiences. This creates a calm, supportive environment where each child feels valued and capable.
