Happy Birthday to our wonderful Head of School, Nancy Parra! 💃

Nancy came to DKH in 2011 as a teacher and brought with her our beloved Ready Readers program, which has since become a hallmark of the DKH experience. Our school is known for its strong literacy programs, and Nancy helped build that foundation.

Since becoming Head of School in 2016, Nancy has continued to lead DKH with so much heart and dedication. In 2025, she led the charge in earning our Cognia accreditation and expanding into First Grade, followed by Second Grade in 2026. Along the way, she's continued to bring new ideas to our classrooms through programs like AgriSTEAM and dedicated STEM, Art, and Music classes.

But what makes Nancy so special goes well beyond her work at DKH. She has a big heart for children and families and is always finding ways to give back to organizations serving children in our community.

Today we celebrate you, Nancy! Thank you for all you do for our students, teachers, families, and community. DKH is a special place, and so much of that is because of you.

Please join us in wishing Nancy a very happy birthday!

Before they were teaching at DKH, our teachers had their own school picture days! We’re having a little fun looking back as we get ready for Picture Day on October 21 & 22.

We’re looking forward to welcoming Click Studios Texas to capture this year’s individual and class photos.

Happy Fall Break, DKH families! 🍂

We hope everyone enjoys a few days of beautiful fall weather and time together!

DKH Academy will be closed October 9–12. Office hours and school tours will resume Tuesday, October 13.

And a big thank you to everyone who has brought pumpkins for our Pumpkin Project! Our front porch is looking wonderful, and the children are loving seeing all the pumpkins as they arrive at school each morning.

If your family hasn't dropped one off yet, you're still welcome to leave a pumpkin on our porch!

Enjoy your fall break! We look forward to seeing everyone next week!

Our Junior Kindergarten teachers have teaching in their DNA! Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. McGilvrey each had a special surprise when their moms, both former teachers, visited their classrooms as Mystery Readers for the day.

Mystery Reader is one of our favorite traditions in Junior Kindergarten. At the beginning of the year, families have the opportunity to sign up to visit the classroom and read a favorite book to the class. The children love finding out who their reader will be, and it’s such a sweet way to bring a little piece of home into their school day.

Junior Kindergarten, sometimes referred to as Transitional Kindergarten, is part of our Early Elementary program at DKH. This longstanding program offers children an extra year to grow socially, emotionally and academically before Kindergarten, while still giving them the structure and experiences of an elementary classroom.

Fall Carnival has been part of DKH for so many years. It’s one of those traditions we all look forward to. Families, teachers, alumni, friends, and neighbors come together for games, pumpkins and fall activities.

There are lots of activities for the kids to keep them busy, while everyone else has time to visit and enjoy the afternoon. Our DKH PTO puts a lot of care into keeping this tradition going year after year and we so love the nostalgic slow pace of the day. It just feels like fall!

🎃 🧡 Let’s paint the DKH campus orange! 🎃 🧡

Our PTO Pumpkin Project is underway, and we’d love to see a pumpkin on campus representing every child at DKH.

If your family is picking up pumpkins this fall, consider adding one for DKH and helping us fill our Briarhill Blvd. border with a little more fall color.

Families are welcome to place their own pumpkin along the border, or leave it by the front door and our PTO will place it for you.

DKH alumni and former families are welcome to join in too. If DKH has been part of your family’s story, we’d love to have a pumpkin from you on campus this fall.

The attached flyer includes a few local pumpkin deals this weekend.

At the end of the season, unpainted pumpkins will be donated to the River Walk Pumpkin Drive and to Mrs. Rotella’s pig, Wilbur. 🐷

Ms. Mercado is our 2’s teacher and after-school Spanish teacher. She’s also affectionately known as the “Nap Queen” for her ultra-cozy classroom, where our toddlers settle in for some of the best naps at DKH.

One of our favorite beginning-of-the-year traditions at DKH is getting to know the people behind each little face in our classrooms. Here, Mrs. Moon is sharing a laugh with her student over an “About Me” collage.

Family photos are tucked into classrooms all across campus, giving children a little piece of home nearby and helping teachers get to know the people they love most. It’s one of the simple traditions we love, and part of what helps DKH feel like an extension of home.
